New Orleans Saints vs. Chicago Bears NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written December 9, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The NFL Network brings yet another exciting game this week, as the 7-6 Chicago Bears host the 7-6 New Orleans Saints in week 15 of NFL action. Now the two teams might have the same record, but the Bears are the team that has the much better chance of making the playoffs, since all they have to do is jump the Vikings who they trail by just 1 game in the NFC North, while the Saints have to jump at least on team in their division and a number of teams from the NFC East as well. Both teams kept their hopes alive with wins last week, as the Bears took care of business against the Jags 23-10, while the Saints snuck out a close one against division rival Atlanta 29-25. For those of you looking to do some NFL betting this weekend, the oddsmakers have the Bears 3 point favorites over the Saints at Sportsbook.com

The Saints remained a force at home, and thanks to an offense that just found a way to score when it needed to, the Saints still are in the hunt after a rough start to the season. Drew Brees had a much better day against the Falcons the 2nd time around, as he threw for 230 yards and 2 scores, while Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush combined for 182 yards, including a 5 yard touchdown run by Thomas that put the Saints up for good. Both Thomas and Bush found the endzone in this receiving game as well in this one, so its easy to see who the big players were in this one. This week the Saints have to deal with heading to Chicago and taking on the Bears in the cold midwest, and it will likely be up to the running back duo to get it going in this one, as it might not be so friendly outside to throw the ball for Brees and company.

The Saints defense started off strong shutting out the Falcons in the opening quarter, but followed it by allowing a two 2nd quarter touchdowns, and the Falcons wound up with the lead going into the 4th quarter. Now the Saints were able to make the final key stops to win the game, but they gave up over 315 yards to Matt Ryan in this one, but did intercept the rookie quarterback once in this one. Now the Bears offense is a more pound it in your face than the Falcons, and if the Saints can’t stop the run this week in Chicago, they can pretty much say goodbye to their playoff chances this season. The Bears needed to win last week and did just that, but with the Vikings winning as well, the Bears face yet another week where it is almost a must win for these guys if they want to keep their season alive after the regular season. Last week the Bears used a big first half from Kyle Orton who threw for both of his touchdowns in the first two periods of play, and running back Matt Forte had almost all his yards in the first half, as they Bears put up 20 in the first half to grab complete control of this game. In the second half the offense really slowed down scoring just 3 points, but they did exactly what they needed to do to win this game. Now this wee against the Saints if the defense has trouble stopping Brees like so many teams have had this season, than the offense better be ready to put some more points on the board, but we really think the cold is going to slow down the Saints just enough for the Bears in this one.

The Bears defense really came to play last week, and it’s the effort this team needs if this team is going to keep on winning during the final 3 games of the season. They held the Jaguars to pretty much nothing the whole game, as the Jaguars had just 3 points till they were able to score their only touchdown of the game in the 4th quarter off a 4 yard pass from David Garrard to Maurice Jones-Drew. Now Garrard had a hard time getting it going, as he was 19 of 38 for just 178 with and also had an interception. The run defense for the Bears did give up 119 yards, but the key was they didn’t let it beat them in this one, as they never let the Jags get much of anything going to sustain long drives. This week the defense will definitely be tested and if they can control this game against the Saints, this team will have a ton of confidence going into the final two games of the season.
