San Antonio Spurs v. Cleveland Cavs Odds

Written April 5, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

Cavs SpursThe San Antonio Spurs are coming off a 126-121 road win at Indiana, but as of late the Spurs have not been playing sharp basketball.  Coach Greg Popovich has made it a point to get his stars as much rest as possible.  Tim Duncan and Manu Ginoboli have been getting halves and sometimes full games off to get as healthy and fresh as possible for the playoffs.  San Antonio is 5-5 in their last 10 games which include two losses against the Thunder, one home and one on the road.  The Spurs currently hold the number three seed in Western Conference.  However, due to how jam packed it is, that may not last for very long.  So, while coach Popovich would like to have his many guys rest up, today I’m sure is not the time to do it.  When healthy, the Spurs match up well against Cleveland.  Duncan has no problem guarding Varajeo or even Ilgauskas.  Parker will get the better of Mo Williams, Ginoboli will be a mismatch for whoever guards him and Bruce Bowen and Michael Finley will of most likely get the nod to cover LeBron.  The Spurs average only one less point per game and give up only two less a game than the Cavs.  The field goal percentages are dead even and the Spurs shoot only one percent better from the line.  These two teams are very evenly matched in my mind while the Spurs need this game more.  Look for the x-factor tonight to be guard Tony Parker.  The two-time champion tends to have his biggest games against the best competition.  If you are looking to bet on the NBA Sunday, then BetUS is offering a $500 signup bonus on any $500 initial deposit by our readers!

The Cavs have lost back-to-back games for only the second time all season.  The soon to be #1 seed in the Eastern Conference heading into the playoffs has struggled during their last two games from the field.  Their last loss was at Orlando where they got pummeled 116-87.  We would like to think this two game slide is just a bump in the road, but how can we be sure?  This is a much improved Eastern Conference as the Celtics, Magic and now the Heat lead by D-Wade who is just playing out of his mind this season have emerged as teams who can be a big problem come playoff time.  Now, we all know how dominant LeBron can be, he is an absolute impossibility to guard one-on-one and will always keep his team focused.  Tonight would be a good time to remind the league that this is the same team who has accrued a 36-1 home record this year and the same team who is going to end this season with 60+ wins.  King James will need some help tonight as they are facing a team with more experience in big games than any team in the league.  Tim Duncan continues to get the least respect out of any star in the league and is still easily a top 10 player in my mind.  The spread is currently Cavs -6.5 and the O/U is set at 181.  These teams are evenly matched, 6.5 points seems to steep.

Haimo’s Hot Notes:  The Spurs and Cavs have some trends that aren’t to appealing.  The Spurs are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Sunday games and 3-7 ATS in their last ten games overall.  The Cavs are 3-9 ATS in their last twelve games overall and 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games.  The Spurs have had success against the Central Division going 8-3 ATS in their last eleven games overall.  The combination of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginoboli and Tony Parker will out play the trio of LeBron James, Mo Williams and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.  I am leaning towards the Spurs money line but I don’t feel it is necessary to be greedy today.  Take the 6.5 points and the UNDER 181 points.
