San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Odds

Written October 25, 2009 by Black Widow

The San Diego Chargers visit their AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday. The Chargers sit at 2-3 after their 23-34 home loss on Monday Night Football to the Broncos, while the Chiefs are now 1-5 after their first win of the season last weekend. Kansas City beat Washington 14-6 on the road. NFL odds are posted, and they show the Chargers -5 over the Chiefs with a Total Set of 44 points.

Chances are that another 8-8 record will not get the Chargers into the playoffs, and they know it. San Diego will need a big run just to make the postseason, and it starts with this divisional game against the pesky Chiefs Sunday. San Diego’s biggest concern is on the defensive side of the ball after allowing 38 points to Pittsburgh two weeks ago and 34 points to the Broncos last week, even though Denver scored 2 touchdowns on returns. The Chargers were 2-0 against the Chiefs last season, but they were each 1-point victories. So by no means is this expected to be a walk in the park. San Diego has allowed 568 yards and 5 touchdowns passes in their two games, letting Big Ben and Kyle Orton complete 74.5 percent of their passes. Phillip Rivers has done his part for San Diego, throwing for 1,519 yards and 7 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions. But the lack of a running game makes the Chargers very one-dimensional, and Rivers cannot do it all on his own. The Chargers rank last in the league at 57.6 rushing yards/game.

The Chiefs had lost 9 consecutive games before their 14-6 win at Washington last week. Head coach Todd Haley is known as an offensive mastermind, but Kansas City is struggling to move the ball and score points this season. Their struggles can also be attributed to the lack of a running game as they average just 98.0 yards/contest on the ground, ranking 25th in the league in that category. Larry Johnson has had a very hard time getting going, but he is coming off a season-high 83 yards on 23 carries against the Redskins. Matt Cassel has thrown for 897 yards with 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, so he’s not making too many mistakes and he is managing this offense as well as he can. But Cassel is completing just 57.1% of his passes, and a big reason is because he’s not getting much time from his offensive line to find open receivers. Cassel has already been sacked 19 times and he has fumbled 5 times, but fortunately the Chiefs have got back on each fumble. The Chiefs will be hoping to avoid a 3rd straight home loss to the Chargers Sunday.
