2011 San Diego Chargers Schedule

Written by

The San Diego Chargers went into the 2010-11 NFL season as the clear-cut favorites to win the AFC West after four straight division titles, but the Chargers managed to go just 9-7 and wound up losing the division to the Kansas City Chiefs. San Diego was great on both offense and defense, but had arguably the worst special teams unit in the league. Luckily for the Chargers that is an area you can improve rather quickly. With Philip Rivers leading the way at quarterback, don’t be surprised to see the Chargers back on top the West this season.

Let’s take a look at the Chargers 2011-12 NFL schedule to get a better grasp of where this team is headed this season. Outside of their six division games against the Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Oakland Raiders, Denver will take on the AFC East, NFC North, Baltimore Ravens, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Chargers went 3-3 within the division last year, splitting their two games with the Chiefs, beating the Broncos twice, and losing both contest against the Raiders. Not exactly what everyone expected going into the season, as the West wasn’t getting much credit at all before the year started. San Diego should be favored in both their games against the Broncos, but with Kansas City and Oakland on the fast track to turning their organizations around, a split is likely in both series. How they do against these three teams will play a huge role in how their season ends.

In San Diego’s four games against the AFC East they get the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills at home, while having to go on the road to take on the New England Patriots and New York Jets. I don’t see any reason why the Chargers won’t be favored in both home games, but getting a win at either New England or New York would be a surprise. Anything less than a 2-2 finish against the East would be a disappointment.

The Chargers will open the season at home against the Minnesota Vikings, a game they should win, but the other three games against the NFC North figure to bring quite a challenge. San Diego will be tested in both road games against the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears, but it figures to be a complete toss up when the Green Bay Packers come to town in week 9. San Diego needs to go at least 2-2 in these games if they want to make it back to the postseason.

San Diego has a great shot at winning both their conference games against teams who finished second in the AFC South and AFC North. They get the Ravens at home and then go on the road to take on the Jaguars. The Chargers beat the Jaguars 38-13 at home last year, and should be able to find a way to win on the road. Beating Baltimore will be no easy task, but getting them at home is a big advantage for the Chargers.
