San Diego State at BYU

The fourth-ranked San Diego State are one of only two unbeaten teams left in the country. Their perfect start to the season is in serious jeopardy Wednesday when they travel to face the ninth-ranked BYU Cougars. The Cougars have lost just once all season, and according to odds makers they are expected to win this contest and hand the Aztecs their first loss of the season. The lines show us odds of BYU -5 over San Diego State.
This match-up features two of the best points guards in the country in Jimmer Fredette from BYU and D.J. Gay for San Diego State. Fredette leads the nation in scoring at 26.7 points per game, while also leading his team in assists at 4.4 per contest. Gay is the second-leading scorer on his team at 12.8 points per contest and he also leads the Aztecs at 3.2 assists per game. Certainly the edge goes to Fredette from an individual standpoint, but SDSU is very strong from top to bottom with all five starters averaging at least 8.2 points per game.
San Diego State is 20-1 while BYU is 19-1, and each team is off to a perfect 5-0 start in the Mountain West Conference. As a result, this game has been sold out for more than a week and there will be at least 20 NBA scouts in attendance. This is the first time that two teams ranked inside the Top 10 will meet in Provo in BYU’s history. They had a similar atmosphere when their 53-game home winning streak was on the line against Wake Forest in 2009, but the Demon Deacons got the best of them that day with a 94-87 victory.
Aztecs head coach Steve Fisher says that he knows Gay isn’t the best player on his own team, but gave him the captain spot without even taking a vote. He is never afraid to take a big shot and has come up with huge performances against quality teams this season. Gay scored 30 points in a win over New Mexico earlier this month, and followed that up with a 20-point performance against Air Force. Fredette put up a school-record 49 points against Arizona last year so everyone knew he was in line for a monster year. He has lived up to the expectations and more, scoring 40-plus in two of his last three games.
Gay has certainly been the lynchpin for SDSU since coming here. He has played in all 123 games and there’s a good chance he goes the entire 40 minutes Wednesday, doing everything he can to get his team a win. He’s no stranger to big minutes, playing all but one minute in the Mountain West Tournament last season. The Aztecs went on to win that tourney and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. BYU beat SDSU 82-68 at home last season and have won all eight of their home games this year. But this is a different Aztecs team, and look out for the big bodies of Kawhi Leonard and Malcolm Thomas inside. Leonard leads the team in scoring (15.7) and rebounding (10.3) while Thomas puts up 11.9 points and 8.1 boards while blocking 2.1 shots per contest.
Got something to say?
