2011 San Francisco 49ers Schedule

Written by

The San Francisco 49ers dug themselves a hole too keep to climb out of last season. The 49ers dropped their first five games of the 2010-11 campaign before going 6-5 the rest of the way to finish at 6-10 on the season. Shockingly, they still had a chance to win the NFC West at the end of the year but a loss to the St. Louis Rams in Week 16 did them in.

Alex Smith was shaky all season and still just hasn’t been able to live up to expectations from being a former No. 1 overall pick. San Francisco gave Troy Smith a try, and while he played well in a few games he just couldn’t make the big throws down the field that the 49ers desperately needed. Teams were able to stack the line against Frank Gore, and once he went down with an injury they could never recover.

It’s time to go over San Francisco’s schedule for the 2011-12 season to see if they can finally break through and win this division to get back into the playoffs. The 49ers actually finished with the best divisional record at 4-2 last season, but wound up in third place in the NFC West due to going 2-8 against all other foes. They will once again play six divisional games against the Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals.

The 49ers are set to square off against the NFC East and the AFC North this season which accounts for eight games. I don’t see them being favored in any games against the NFC East as they host the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, while traveling to face the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. If they want to win their division, they are going to have to sneak out a win or two against the East.

San Francisco will host the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns out of the North. They clearly won’t be favored against Ben Roethlisberger and company, but should be a favorite to beat Cleveland. They have a winnable road meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals, but a tough challenge in Week 12 as they hit the road to face the Baltimore Ravens.

Rounding out their schedule are games against the third-place finishers in the NFC North and the NFC South. That means they will face the Detroit Lions on the road and host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Candlestick Park. San Francisco should have a decent chance to win both of those contests. This team simply has too much talent to finish 6-10 again, and if they can improve by at least two wins this season that might just be enough to finally win the NFC West.
