Seattle Seahawks vs Green Bay Packers Spread & Odds

Written October 10, 2008 by Jason Lowry

After starting off the season looking like they didn’t miss a beat with Aaron Rodgers taking over for Brett Favre at quarterback, the Green Bay Packers have went on to lose 3 straight. This week the Packers head to Seattle to take on the 1-3 Seahawks who got absolutely killed by the Giants last week 44-6. With both teams coming in with records worse than many saw coming, the oddsmakers are rolling with the home team in this one, as the Seahawks come in as 2 point favorites over the Packers at Bookmaker.com

Now its not so much that the offense is to blame with the way they have played, as Rodgers has actually looked pretty good to start the season, and already has 1274 yards and 9 scores. Where the problem comes up is in the running game, and the fact that Ryan Grant hasn’t been able to get much going, Grant did have his best game of the season rushing for 83 yards last week, but the team would really like to see this guy find the endzone and put up closer to 100 yards a game. As soon as the Packers figure out how to get Grant going, this offense should take off.

The Packers defense is a little banged up with a good deal of their starters suffering some kind of injury. So the fact that the Packers are giving up over 144 yards a game on the ground, is likely due to that the fact that they just aren’t full speed out there. While injuries are a part of the game for every team, the Packers have really been hit hard this season, and once these guys start getting healthier look for this defense to become a strength as it was in 2007. This week they take on a Seahawks team that hasn’t done much this season on the offensive side of things, so expect some better results. Bet Packers +2 at Bookmaker.com

Its a little hard to see just why the oddsmakers think the Seahawks are going to be a better team this week, as the only game they have won this season came against the Rams, who just might not beat anybody. One thing is pretty clear is that the offense has played much better at home, so maybe things will start to head in the right direction this week. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has really struggled this season throwing just 2 touchdowns to 4 interceptions. Luckily the team has got some solid play out of free agent running back Julius Jones, who has really ran the ball well since coming to Seattle. The one big concern this week is Hasselbeck is nursing a knee injury that has kept him out of practice this week, and with backup Seneca Wallace out for sure, this offense needs Hasselbeck to play if they want any chance of winning.

It’s a little hard to figure out just what has happened on the defensive side of things for the Seahawks, over the last few years they haven’t got the credit they deserved and now all the sudden they can’t stop anybody. Last week the Giants came in without star receiver Plaxico Burress and were still able to throw for 272 yards and 3 scores. The run defense hasn’t been very good either and last week the trio of Giants running backs (Jacobs, Bradshaw, and Ward) were able to run for 241 yards , with Jacobs leading the way with 136 and 2 scores. If the Seahawks don’t figure a way out to stop the other team, this team could go from division winner to last place real fast in the NFC West. Bet Seahawks -2 at Bookmaker.com
