Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written December 5, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The New England Patriots looked so convincing in their win over Miami two weeks ago, but last week they had no answer for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the Steelers came into Foxborough and beat the Patriots 33-10. The Patriots now desperately need a win to stay right in the mix of the playoff picture, and to do so they will have to go to Seattle and beat the Seahawks, who got worked on Thanksgiving Day by the Cowboys 34-9. For those of you looking to do a little NFL betting on the game this weekend, the oddsmakers have the Patriots 4.5 point favorites on the road over the Seahawks at Sportsbook.com

The Patriots come into this one having to have a little doubt about their offense after the Steelers shut down Matt Cassel for the first time in 3 games, as Cassel came in off back to back 400 yard passing performances, but was able to throw for just 169 yards on 19 of 39 passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions. That wasn’t the end of Cassel’s problems as he was sacked 5 times, and had two costly fumbles as well. This week the Patriots take on the Seahawks who haven’t won in 5 weeks, and last week they let Romo pass all over them. Look for the Patriots offense to get back to what it was a couple weeks ago, as the Seahawks season is over and its unlikely they will play with the intensity needed to win this game.

The Patriots defense just couldn’t keep up in the turnover battle, and after going into half time locked up at 10 all, the Patriots defense fell apart, giving up 23 second half points, while the offense failed to do anything with the football, but give it to the other team. The Patriots kept Roethlisberger in check for the most part, allowing him to throw for just 179 yards on 17 of 33 passing, but Big Ben had two touchdown passes, and the Pats had little success stopping the duo of Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore out of the backfield. The Seahawks aren’t scoring with much success this season, so look for the Pats to pick up the pace this week on the road. Bet Patriots -4.5 at Sportsbook.com

The Seahawks managed just 3 field goals last week against the Cowboys, but did see some improvement in the passing game, as Matt Hasselbeck bounced back for a 102 yard performance to throw for 287 yards, but still managed to throw an interception. Now part of the reason the Seahawks threw for more yards, was the running game was not working, as former Cowboy Julius Jones ran for a team high 37 yards on 11 carries. Now the Patriots gave up over a 160 yards on the ground last week, and you have to think the Seahawks are going to try and use that same game plan in the this weekend. If they are able to get the running game going in this one, there is a good chance they can keep this one close and even win this game.

The problem is even if the Seahawks can get the running game going, they still have to worry about the Patriots passing attack, as there is no doubt the Seahawks don’t have that same kind of defense as the Steelers threw at the Pats last week. Against the Cowboys in their last game, the Seahawks let Tony Romo throw for 331 yards and 3 scores, as the Cowboys jumped out early and had this one in the bag by halftime. Now a lot depends on the weather and which Matt Cassel decides to show up, but either way it doesn’t look good for the Seattle. Bet Seahawks +4.5 at Sportsbook.com
