Seattle Seahawks 2008 NFL Draft Needs
The Seahawks were pretty solid in 2007, but never really seemed like they were a dominant team that would make a run for at another game in the Super Bowl. The team did finish 10-6, but it was in the weak NFC West. They were able to beat Washington in the first round of the playoffs, but got man handled by the Packers in the second round. The team has went out and landed running backs T.J. Duckett and Julios Jones, meaning they are probably ready to part ways with Shawn Alexander. They did lose LB Kevin Bently, WR D.J. Hackett, LB Niko Koutouvides and DT Chuck Darby. So the team is likely improved from last season, they can still make some more upgrades in this year’s draft. They have the 25th pick in the 1st round so they will have plenty of options to go with. Here is a look at our top 5 needs that the Seahawks need to address when they are on the clock.
1. Wide Receiver
With the loss of Hackett to free agency, and Bobby Engram starting to get up there in age, the team needs to find a big time receiver to play alongside Deion Branch. They currently have Nate Burleson as the #2 wide out but could upgrade this spot if they decide to look this way early on. They might have a shot at California’s DeSean Jackson or Indiana’s James Hardy.
2. Defensive End
Patrick Kearns is a solid former pro bowl defensive end and was great in 2007, and Darryl Tapp is a solid guy on the other side, but they don’t have much here to rotate in or someone who can step in and be a force if one of them goes down with an injury. They might take a shot at a guy like Auburn’s Quentin Groves or USC’s Lawrence Jackson.
3. Offensive Tackle/Guard
Though the team is set here with Walter Jones controlling the left tackle spot they could use another guy as a project type of player at either guard or tackle who can step in the future if needed. This could be an early pick if they find a guy they like still on the board or they might wait till late in the draft to fill this void. If they go early they might go after the best guard in the draft, in Virginia’s Brandon Albert.
4. Tight End
The team really doesn’t have a big time threat at the tight end spot. If the team is able to grab a solid tight end in the draft, it could greatly help out their red zone production. There has been talk that they are taking a good luck at USC’s Fred Davis.
5. Cornerback
The team is pretty set on the left side with Marcus Trufant, but Kelly Jennings is still a work in progress opposite of Trufant. The depth here isn’t that great and they could use a solid backup to come in when needed. They might look at another USC guy in Terrell Thomas or maybe wait a little longer and take a guy like San Jose State’s Dwight Lowery.
