2011 Seattle Seahawks Schedule
Written by Jack Jones
The Seattle Seahawks are coming off a 7-9 season which was good enough to win the putrid NFC West division. Seattle had to beat the St. Louis Rams in Week 17 just to get in, but they took care of business behind a tremendous defensive effort. A week later they upset the New Orleans Saints in a shootout 41-36 in the Wild Card round as a 10-point underdog. The Seahawks would go on to lose to the Chicago Bears in the Divisional Round, but this young team gained some valuable experience last year.
Now I take a look at their 2011-12 schedule to see if they can make any progress this year. First and foremost, they must decide what they are going to do with Matt Hasselbeck at quarterback. Back injuries have forced him to miss a plethora of games over the past few seasons and he may be on his last legs. The defense certainly must get better after giving up 25.4 points and 368.6 yards per game last year. Nonetheless, Pete Carroll has already won over the respect of his players in only one year on the job.
Seattle managed to go 4-2 in the NFC West which certainly helped them win it after going only 3-7 in non-divisional games. The Seahawks will play the 49ers, Rams and Cardinals twice just as they do every season. They are also set to take on the first-place finishers in the NFC South and the NFC North divisions which would be the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears, respectively. That means they are going to have a tougher schedule than the other teams in their division.
The Seahawks are set to take on the entire AFC North division in 2011. They get to host the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens, but will have to travel to face the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. The only game they should be favored in is against the Bengals at home. My guess is that they will get through that division with a 1-3 record.
It doesn’t get any easier against the NFC East which legitimately has three playoff contenders, provided the Washington Redskins are as bad as they were a year ago. They host Washington and the Philadelphia Eagles in back-to-back weeks. Seattle will hit the road to face the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, two games where they will be a huge underdog. They should be Washington at home, but that’s not a guarantee. I’m seeing a 1-3 record against the East as well.
This team will have a hard time getting back into the playoffs in 2011 with the daunting schedule in front of them. Their only chance is to dominate the NFC West once again and finish with a 4-2 record or better. Outside of their division, there really isn’t a lot of winnable games on their schedule. Carroll did a masterful job getting his team to seven wins last year, but I don’t see them exceeding that win total this season.
