Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL Picks & Odds

Written October 24, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Things aren’t going good for Mike Holmgren in his final season as coach of the Seattle Seahawks as they have started the season 1-5, and this week they travel to take on the San Francisco 49ers who are just 2-5 and have recently fired head coach Mike Nolan and turned the reigns over to Mike Singletary for the rest of the season. Both teams come into this one suffering losses last week, but the oddsmakers like the home team a little more in this one, as the 49ers come in 5.5 point favorites over the Seahawks at BetUS.com

If you looked at the stats for the Seahawks you wouldn’t think this team had just 1 win, as they are putting up the 3rd most yards through the air with 238 and the 2nd most yards on the ground at 173, and lead the league overall with 412 yards a game. The problem is they are stalling inside the redzone, and turnovers are killing this team. Last week backup quarterback Seneca Wallace got the start and was about to throw for just 73 yards, and the running game mustered just a little over a 100 yards, so there is no question the offense just didn’t have the same outburst that it is use to. This week the Seahawks have their best shot at grabbing win number 2 win they take on the 49ers, but will have to do it without Matt Hasselbeck again.

The Seahawks defense had no answer for Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia last week, as he picked apart their defense for 310 yards on 26 of 31 passing. It was a little better against the run keeping the Bucs under a 100 yards, but whenever you give up that much yardage overall your chances of winning are never good. Now this week they face a 49ers offense that really struggled last week, so it could be a good day for a defense that many thought was going to be much better than its been this season. The 49ers really struggled against the Giants last week, and no one struggled more than running back Frank Gore who was able to gain just 11 yards on 11 carries, and one of those runs went for 9 yards. If the 49ers want any chance of winning this week they have to get Gore going and more like the back that ran it for 101 yards and a score over the Eagles 2 weeks ago. It looks like JT O’Sullivan is the starter as of now, but you have to wonder how much more they can take with him behind center. He has now thrown at least 2 interceptions in 4 straight games, and was sacked 6 times and had 4 fumbles last week. We wouldn’t be shocked to see Shaun Hill play this week, and that might end up being the best thing that happens to this offense.

The 49ers defense really played well enough to win last week, as they kept the sluggish Giants in check for the most part allowing Eli to throw for just 161 yards, and held Brandon Jacobs to just 69 yards, though he did have 2 scores. The defense also put some points on the board, as they blocked a Giants field goal attempt and ran it back to the house. The 49ers defense is going to have to play well again this week, and a win here keeps them with an outside shot at coming back in the NFC West. Bet 49ers -5.5 at BetUS.com
