SEC Conference Tournament Predictions

Written March 10, 2010 by Kyle Hunter

The Kentucky Wildcats have been the clear class of the SEC the entire year and they look destined for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The rest of the league still has plenty of work to do, and there are some teams that are on the outside of the bubble looking in that might be able to play their way in with an impressive tournament. The tournament is being held in Nashville this year, so Vanderbilt and the Volunteers of Tennessee may have a bit of a home court advantage. The Favorites

In this tournament there really is only one real favorite, the Kentucky Wildcats. Bodog.com has odds posted for each of the conference tournaments and currently Kentucky is as a huge favorite at odds of 2/5 to win the tournament. Kentucky has great guard play and a great duo down low with Patterson and Cousins, so there really aren’t a whole lot of weaknesses on that team. The other two teams at fairly low odds are the Tennessee Volunteers at just 3/1 and the Vanderbilt Commodores at 4/1.

Dark Horses

If you have watched much of the SEC this year, you should know that South Carolina is a dark horse team capable of beating some of the top teams in this league. Not only did they beat Kentucky earlier in the year, but they also defeated Vanderbilt on the road on Senior night for Vandy. Devan Downey is a great player and he won’t let this team go down without a whole lot of fighting.

Another possible dark horse candidate is Florida. The Gators have played pretty good basketball of late and Billy Donovan knows how to get his team performing well in the month of March.

Bubble Teams

Three teams are in the bubble discussion from the SEC at this point. Florida is probably in decent shape so long as it wins its first round game against Auburn. On the other hand, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are both looking like real long shots at this point unless they put together a strong run in this tournament. Mississippi State will likely play Florida on Friday, and if they don’t win that one then they will almost certainly head to the NIT. Ole Miss will likely face a very tough match up in Tennessee in their first game.

Predictions

The Vanderbilt Commodores have a great home court advantage so they can’t be counted out in this tournament. That being said, I simply can’t pick against the Kentucky Wildcats in this one. I think Vanderbilt has a fairly easy path to the finals, but I don’t think they will be able to top Kentucky. I think the depth of the Wildcats will prove too much for the rest of the league once again.
