SEC Tournament Predictions & NCAA Projections
Written March 6, 2009 by Jack Jones
One of our handicapping experts, Craig Trapp, thinks this is the worst SEC we have seen in recent memory, but all of that could chance if the conference pulls off a few upsets in the NCAA Tournament. Right now there are only two teams that is a definite to make the Big Dance and there are three more teams on the bubble fighting for what should be two bids. Let’s see how Craig thinks everything will shake out.
LSU
The Tigers won the SEC this year with only two losses (their last loss at home to Vanderbilt was a bad one). The conference tournament will also be important for the Tigers in terms of seeding. This team is most likely going to end up a #4 or #5 seed if they play tough to finish off the season, but this team will probably be upset in the 2nd round.
Tennessee
The Vols have had a couple big wins here lately over Florida and South Carolina, both of which came on the road. This team should definitely be in the tournament now. Some pundits think the Vols might still find themsevles on the bubble if they lose early in the SEC tournament, but Craig thinks they are in either way. Tennessee has the toughest strength of schedule in the league and an RPI in the top 25. Most likely you will find this team as an #8 seed, but which #1 would like to face Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism in the second round? Still, most likely this team is one and done.
Florida
Craig thinks that the Gators are going to string together just enough wins at the end of the year to make the dance, but this is definitely a team on the bubble. Three straight losses though, including last night at Mississippi State and before that at home against Tennessee has the Gators facing an uphill battle. Trapp thinks that this team snakes in with a #10 or #11 seed and loses in the first round.
Kentucky
The Wildcats need to put together an impressive conference tournament or else they will be sitting on the sidelines come tournament time. The loss at home last night to Georgia was embarrassing and should have this team out. That was the third straight loss and they have proven that they do not deserve an invite.
South Carolina
The loss last night to Tennessee may have sealed the Gamecoks fate as they are also coming off a bad loss at Vanderbilt. This team does have some young talent and they should be in the mix over the next couple of years, but unless they really impress in the SEC Tournament you aren’t going to hear their name called on Selection Sunday.
None of these teams have really impressed Craig much, and no team on the bubble will take charge and prove themselves worthy. It’s hard to beleive that the SEC won’t get three or four teams in the tournament, but realistically that should be the case.
