Ken Shamrock v. Kimbo Slice Fight Odds & Predictions

Written October 4, 2008 by Jack Jones

Kimbo Slice, who real name is Kevin Ferguson, will head to the ring on October 4th in Sunrise, Florida to take on Ken Shamrock. This is the fourth fight for cult icon Kimbo Slice and it will be the third installment of the Saturday Night Fights series on CBS. The oddsmakers that have the best odds if you are betting on Kimbo is Sportsbook.com, which lists him at -325. That means you have to bet $325 to win $100, pretty steep odds.

There are plenty of high profile fighters who have wanted their shot at Kimbo, but the 44-year-old Shamrock, who has a career record of 26-13-2, won out over Sean Gannon and Brett Rogers. One of the reasons might be that Shamrock is so old, and thus beatable. He has lost his last five fights dating back to 2005 and his last bout against Robert Berry at Cage Rage 25 in March was pretty ugly. He has been fighting for over 15 years and it appears he has more than just a little wear and tear from all that experience.

Another reason Shamrock was chosen is that he still sells. He was the biggest name in the game for years and can still promote his fights. EliteXC is trying to thrive off of Kimbo, so having him beat a big-name opponent, even if he is washed up, would be big for the company’s marketing campaigns as they try to compete with the UFC. However, if you think Shamrock can hang with Kimbo then your best betting odds can be found at Bookmaker, which would pay out $310 for every $100 that you wagered on Shamrock.

I don’t understand why EliteXC chose Shamrock for this fight since he isn’t really a step up in competition from James Thompson, who he beat in a questionable stoppage in the last fight. The only real reason is to line the pockets of all parties and to give Slice a little bit more experience before he takes on Rodgers, who word on the street was guaranteed to get the winner of this bout. It does hurt the reputation of EliteXC to continue to provide a spectacle instead of the toughest challengers and best fights, but maybe that’s the niche they are going for. At any rate, we suggest you take a look at Kimbo in this one, as Shamrock just doesn’t have the speed any longer to compete. Kimbo is strong enough to really hurt him, which is what we think will happen.
