2009 Shelby 427 Predictions & Betting Odds
Written by Jason Lowry

What a start to the 2009 Sprint Cup Series for Matt Kenseth, who arguably had one of his worst seasons statistically of his racing career, as he failed to win a race for the first time since 2001, and had just 9 top five finishes. All Kenseth has done to start the 2009 season is go 2-2 winning the Daytona 500 to open the season and then becoming just the 4th driver in NASCAR history to win the following week at the Auto Club 500. This week Kenseth will look to become the first driver to ever start the season with 3 straight wins, when the Sprint Cup Series heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the 2009 running of the Shelby 427. Las Vegas Motor Speedway is 1.5 mile intermediate oval track, and with so many races on this style of track, this race should give us a great idea of what to expect the rest of the season. Carl Edwards will look to spoil Kenseth’s great start to the season when he tries to defend his championship here at the Shelby 427. WIth the race set to get underway this Sunday afternoon, here is my weekly prediction of the 3 drivers I feel will have a good chance of winning this weekend.
Jimmie Johnson +500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Johnson owned this track from 2005-07, as he won 3 straight here at Las Vegas Speedway, but did struggle last year finishing 29th. Johnson got it going last week finishing 9th at the Auto Club 500 after finishing 31st at the Daytona 500. Johnson is a threat to win each and every week no matter what he does the previous weeks leading up to the race, as he has shown winning 3 straight point championships. We expect a big day from the 48 car, and he is our overall favorite to win this race.
Greg Biffle +700 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Biffle is a bit of a sleeper, as he doesn’t get the same attention that many of the other big name drivers get, but he has proven to be solid here at Vegas, with 3 top ten finishes in the last 4 years, including a 3rd place finish last season. Biffle has not won on this track in his career, but there is a first for everything and we think that this will be the year, as he has raced well to start to the season, finishing 20th at the Daytona 500, and 4th last week at the Auto Club 500. Keep a close eye the 16 car, as it could steal the show this weekend.
Matt Kenseth + 700 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Normally I don’t like picking the same guy week after week, but who can argue with this choice after what has happened to start the season. I know he kind of got a gift at the Daytona 500 with the big wreck knocking out many of the best cars of that race, and then the race gets shortened for just the 4th time in history, but after backing it up last week at the Auto Club 500, Kenseth could be ready to stay at the top with the best drivers all season long. What makes him such a scary pick this weekend is he has had a lot of success here at Vegas, including wins here in 2003 and 2004. Kenseth finished then went on to finish 8th in 2005, 2nd in 2006, and 4th in 2007, and if it wasn’t for a wreck with Jeff Gordon he might of won this race last year, as he was right in the thick of things with just 5 laps to go.
To make sure you get all you need for the upcoming race this weekend, I have provided a complete list of odds for all the drivers at the Shelby 427 thanks to Sportsbook.com.
