2010 Shelby American Predictions

Written by

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend for the 2010 Shelby American, a race that has changed its name over the years, as it was they Shelby 427 a season ago. Kyle Busch will look to make his first big splash of the 2010 season, as he tries to defend his title at this event.

The drivers should be pretty excited about a stop in Vegas, as they get a chance to have some fun in one of the best cities the US has to offer. Jimmie Johnson took home the checkered flag last week at the Auto Club 500, and figures to be a big factor in the race this weekend as well. The Shelby American is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, and with all the bright lights and excitement that Vegas brings it should be one heck of a race. Here is a look at the three drivers I feel have a great shot at winning the race this weekend.

Jimmie Johnson: I know this isn’t much of a shocker taking Johnson to win, but we are talking about a race that he has won three times in the last five years. Johnson first won this event back in 2005, followed by two more wins in 2006 and 2007. One cause for concern is Johnson has not raced well here over the last two seasons, finishing 29th in 2008 and 24th last season. Still it is always a good idea to pick the 48 to take home the win, and I don’t see any reason why he won’t do it again this weekend.

Jeff Burton: I have a good feeling that Burton will be right there at the end of the race with a chance to win. Burton finished third at this event last season, and has really raced well to start the 2010 season with an 11th place finish at Daytona, followed by a 3rd place finish at the Auto Club 500 last week. Burton has had success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with two wins on this track, but those came back-to-back in 1999 and 2000. Still Burton has raced 12 times on this track, and has finished in the top 10 eight times.

Tony Stewart: Stewart is another guy I really think you have to watch out for this weekend, even though he has yet to win on this track in 11 tries. Stewart is coming off a 9th place finish last week, and I look for him to come in racing well right off the bat in Las Vegas. The fact that Stewart hasn’t won on this track, is usually a good sign that the track and driver just don’t go together well, but I think we are going to see a different Stewart this season. Stewart is a year removed from forming his own team, and I think having that first year behind him is going to make things a lot easier. Don’t be surprised to see Stewart in victory lane this weekend.
