2009 Sony Open Picks, Odds, & Predictions.
Written January 13, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The PGA TOUR is back in action as Geoff Ogilvy ran away with the first win of the 2009 season, winning the Mercedes-Benz Championship last week shooting 24 under for the tournament. This week golfers stay in beautiful Hawaii for the 2009 Sony Open from Waialae Course One. Last year K.J. Choi was able to tackle the difficult course, and will be in the field looking to defend his title this weekend. Waialae plays short and tight, so hitting fairways an greens is a must to have success on this course. To get you going on the Sony Open this weekend, I am going to give you my 3 favorites to win this weekend.
Ernie Els +800 to win at Sportsbook.com
Els had a pretty rough 2008 by his standards as he had to miss some time early with an injury. Els only win on the PGA TOUR in 2008 came at the Honda Classic last February, so there is no question this guy is due. Els finished the 2008 season strong with 3 finishes better than 6th in his last 4 TOUR starts, including a 6th place finish at the TOUR Championship. One other reason to like Els this week, is this guy has been lights out at Waialae, as he has finished in the top 5 in all his starts on this course.
Davis Love III +1200 to win at Sportsbook.com
Love also had a pretty rough 2008, as he missed 7 cuts last season, and didn’t notch a win till the final tournament of the season at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. Though the course doesn’t exactly fit Love’s game, this guy has finished in the top 10 five times at Waialae since 1993, and is coming off a tie for 2nd last week at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. This guy is really playing some solid golf, and I see no reason to expect nothing but another solid 4 days of golf from this guy.
Zach Johnson +3000 to win at Sportsbook.com
I am going with a slight sleeper in Johnson for my final pick, as his excellent ball striking is perfect for this course. Johnson also only had one win last season, but it came late in the year at the Valero Texas Open. Johnson had a real slow start to the 2008 season, as he didn’t finish in the top 10 till the end of March at the WGC -CA Championship, but he already has a top 10 finish in 2009, as he finished tied for 6th last week at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. Johnson was excellent over the final two rounds finishing with 13 birdies, an eagle, and zero bogeys.
Be sure to check back each and every week for more previews and predictions for the upcoming PGA Tour Events. I have provided a complete list of each golfers odds at Sportsbook.com.
