South Carolina vs Alabama Football Betting Lines
Written October 14, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The ole ball coach will take his 22nd ranked South Carolina Gamecocks into Tuscaloosa to battle the second ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Spurrier has his squad off to a 5-1 start after a two point victory over Kentucky last weekend. The main reason for the turnaround has been the improved play of quarterback Stephen Garcia and a stingy defense that has played well throughout the first half of the season. Garcia will be in for a treat when he lines up against an Alabama defense that is allowing a little over 12 points per game and is considered by many to be the best unit in the country. South Carolina will be the first of three straight home games for Bama. The Tide are favored by 17 points at home against the Gamecocks according to the latest college football point spreads.
South Carolina was expected to finish at or near the bottom of the tough SEC East division this season but they have turned heads with home wins over Ole Miss and North Carolina State. Their only loss came at Georgia in the second game of the season that turned into a shootout quickly. QB Stephen Garcia has stepped his level of play up ten fold this season, throwing for 1268 yards and nine touchdowns while only being intercepted three times. The sophomore signal caller has benefited from throwing to a talented group of wide receivers. Freshman Alshon Jeffery might have stepped to the front of the group with his three touchdown performance against Kentucky. WR’s Moe Brown and Tori Gurley have also contributed in a major way. LB Eric Norwood is making a case for All-American status with his play through six games. Norwood has totaled 38 tackles, six sacks and has two interceptions with one returned for a touchdown. If you are looking for a great place to bet college football, check out BetUS, where you can get a $500 bonus with a new account and deposit of $500 or more!
Nick Saban has the Crimson Tide ranked in the top 5 once again after a successful 12-2 campaign in 2008. QB Greg McElroy has taken the reigns of an offense that is built around a strong running game and getting the ball to big play wide out Julio Jones in the conservative passing game. The junior quarterback has thrown nine touchdown passes against just one interception. RB Mark Ingram has been a workhorse through six games, carrying the ball 111 times for 659 yards and seven scores. The Alabama offense is about as balanced as they come totaling 223 yards on the ground/game with 221 yards through the air. DT Terrence Cody uses all 365 pounds of himself to be considered the best interior linemen in the nation and MLB Roland McClain provides more punch to one of strongest front sevens in the SEC. The Crimson Tide held Jevan Snead to 140 yards passing on just 11 completions out of 34 attempts and picked off the Rebel QB four times in their 22-3 victory.
If Garcia turns the ball over to this Crimson Tide defense this game could get out of hand quickly. I was not impressed with McElroy against Ole Miss and think if South Carolina can slow the run game down they have a shot to keep this game close. The visitor has won the last two games in this series and Spurrier is 2-0 against Saban. Alabama will win this game fairly easily, but Carolina should get the cover. Play: South Carolina +17

You are insane if you think Alabama’s toughest game this year will be a blowout. The Gamecocks have not been blown out this year and you would be a fool to bet on Alabama -17….but it’s your money.
