The Gamecocks started 7-1 (the lone loss to top-five Michigan State) before the roof caved in as the team lost 11 of its last 13 games. The team used a young group, one that had just two seniors and one junior in the regular rotation. With a lot of experience returning, the Gamecocks should climb up the SEC standings and be more competitive in 2011-12.

Key Losses

The team lost just one starter but two other key contributors from last year’s team. Sam Muldrow led the team in rebounding (7.3 pg) and blocked shots (103) and ranked second in scoring (11.4 ppg). Ramon Galloway was second in steals (34) and third in scoring (10.7 ppg) and assists (50). Stephen Spinella averages 2.5 points and 1.4 rebounds over 11 minutes per game in 15 outings, shooting 39 percent from 3-point range.

2011-12 Preview

Head coach Darrin Horn has transformed his roster to the point that nine of the 11 players on the roster in 2011-12 are freshmen and sophomores. The Gamecocks will have a balance of experience in both the backcourt and frontcourt, thou the goup’s continued relative youth may show through at times this season. But the talent is mostly intact from last year.

Backcourt

Sophomore Bruce Ellington led the team last year in scoring (12.8 ppg) and assists (97) while listing third in steals (31).

Sophomore Brian Richardson is the No. 2 returning backcourter, averaging 5.9 ppg and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore Eric Smith averages 2.4 points and 1.5 assists in 13 minutes per contest.

Frontcourt

Senior Malik Cooke was fourth in scoring (9.4 ppg) last year and second in rebounding (6.4 pg) while leading the team in steals (44).

Junior Lakeem Jackson was fifth in scoring (7.8 ppg) and third in rebounding (5.6 pg) and listing second in assists (66).

Sophomore Damontre Harris shot 57 percent from the floor (no other regular shot 50 percent) while ranking second on the team in blocks (26) and averaging 3.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore R.J. Slawson averaged 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in about nine minutes per game last year.
