South Carolina vs Georgia Betting Odds

The SEC opener between the Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks takes center stage on Saturday, September 12th on ESPN 2 at 7:00 EST. Georgia is coming off a tough 10-24 loss at Oklahoma State in a great win for the Big 12. South Carolina won 7-3 at NC State last week behind a tremendous defensive effort. It appears both teams will have to rely heavily on their defenses early in the season to give their offenses some time to gel. As indicated by the NCAA football point-spreads, we see that oddsmakers have listed Georgia -7 over South Carolina with a Total Set of 38 points.
Backup QB Logan Gray took all the snaps with the first-team in practice on Wednesday, but sources say that starter Joe Cox will get the start Saturday vs. South Carolina. Cox has been battling through a shoulder injury. He isn’t going to get demoted just yet after a poor performance against Oklahoma State last week, completing just 15-of-30 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown. He turned the ball over twice, once via interception and one fumble lost. The Bulldogs only rushed for 95 yards in that game, and it’s clear that they really miss Stafford, Moreno and Massaqoi, their three studs on offense from last year that went on to the NFL Draft. The defense played well, limiting the Oklahoma State offense to 24 points and 307 yards. What killed them was turnovers as they coughed it up 3 times without forcing the Cowboys to give it up once. Fewer mistakes on offense, coupled with more solid defensive play, will give Georgia a great shot to win their SEC opener over the Gamecocks Saturday.

It was ugly, but a win is a win. The South Carolina Gamecocks posted a 7-3 victory over the NC State Wolfpack last Thursday to get the college football season underway. QB Stephen Garcia threw for only 148 yards, not what you would expect from a quarterback in Steve Spurrier’s system. But he did come up with a huge 33-yard completion to Moe Brown late in the game that sealed the victory. Brian Maddox was the star on offense, rushing for 66 yards and the game’s only touchdown. The Gamecocks also had a 38-yard touchdown pass negated in the first quarter with an offensive pass interference call. South Carolina also had two botched field goals to add to their many mistakes. But the defense played so well that one touchdown was plenty to overcome those errors. NC State was held to just 133 yards of total offense, 74 through the air and 59 on the ground. With Georgia steaming over their loss to the Cowboys, the Gamecocks will have to play much better this week if they are to escape with a road victory. Six of the last eight meetings in this series have been decided by 7 points or less, including last year’s hard-fought 14-7 Georgia win in Columbia.
