South Florida at Pittsburgh College Football Odds

Written October 23, 2009 by Hector Garza

The Pittsburgh Panthers are ranked #20 in the nation and will welcome South Florida to their home at Heinz Field this Saturday for what is sure to be a great Big East game. Each team has only loss, the Panthers (6-1) dropping to NC State 31-38, while the Bulls (5-1) only beating came from undefeated Cincinnati. Pitt is favored in this one by 6 ½ points according our NCAA football betting lines and game time is set for 12:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN (regional). The total is currently 48 ½.

After coming off a road win last week against Rutgers, the Panthers are riding a 3 game winning streak, sitting at the top of the conference standings at 3-0 and in control of their destiny. Freshman RB Dion Lewis has been a major contributor, running for 180 yards and 2 scores last week alone. Pitt is a solid rushing team, averaging 174.5 ypg with 918 yards and 9 td’s. QB Bill Stull is having a great year, throwing for 14 td’s to 3 interceptions for over 1400 yards. His favorite targets have been senior TE Dorin Dickerson with 8 td’s, and WR Jonathan Baldwin with 549 yards.  Get serious about college football betting this season with a $500 match bonus from BetUS.

Defensively the Panthers have allowed an average 335.8 ypg, although last week they held the Scarlet Knights to under 290. While they forced 2 turnovers in that game, they’ve only generated a total of 11 through 7 games, a weak point for the unit. As far as pressuring the QB, they’ve excelled. Pitt has tallied an amazing 29 sacks, with Greg Romeus and Adam Gunn combing for 12 of them.

After their only loss last week, the Bulls dropped out of the top 25, but an upset this week would no doubt get them back in contention. The offense has been strong behind backup QB BJ Daniels, who replaced the starter Matt Grothe when he went down with a torn ACL. Through 6 games, Daniels has thrown for 135 ypg with 7 td’s and 4 int. He’s also a threat on the ground, and paces the team with 64 rushes for 365 yards and another 4 td’s. If Daniels can play an error free game, this offense can put points on the board.

Against #5 Cincinnati, the defense didn’t respond well. The stop unit allowed 189 rushing yards and 401 total yards in the 34-17 loss. The unit is only allowing 286 ypg with only 118.8 ypg on the ground, but the Bearcats still found holes despite having their starting QB knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter. Despite the loss, South Florida boasts 17 turnovers and 16 sacks through the season, and will be hungry to prove themselves against another ranked opponent.

The Bulls are on the road this week and have traveled well with a 3-0 record. Both defenses are solid, and can force turnovers with pressure, sacks or interceptions. The game will be decided in the hands of QB’s BJ Daniels and Bill Stull. USF can pull off this upset on the road.
