South Florida at Rutgers College Football Odds

Written November 11, 2009 by Hector Garza

Betfirms has many more football previews and expert college picks.  South Florida (23) is hitting the road as they travel to take on Rutgers in Big East conference play.  The Bulls only two losses this year have come against the top conference teams, Cincinnati (9-0) and Pittsburgh (8-1).  Interestingly enough, Rutgers has lost to the same two as both teams are coming into this matchup with 6-2 records.  Gametime will be this Thursday at 7:30 pm EST in Rutgers stadium, and the college football odds have South Florida favored by 1 point with the total set at 45.

Rutgers has gotten off to a very impressive start with a true freshman quarterback leading the way.  Tom Savage has thrown 8 td’s to only 1 int in the 7 games that he’s started this year, and WR Tim Brown has proven to be the deep threat.  He has 37 catches with an average of 21.9 ypc and 5 scores.  The only other reciever with double digit receptions is Mohamed Sanu with 32.  RB’s Joe Martinek and Jourdan Brooks account for 11 of the 14 rushing td’s in what is a respectable ground game churning out close to 150 ypg.

Defensively the Scarlet Knights have one shutout on the year and have only given up 16 total td’s.  The secondary has done a decent job holding opponents to 216 ypg in the air, but have done much better forcing turnovers.  The team has proven they have multiple playmakers as they’ve totaled 11 interceptions between 10 players, with three of those being returned for td’s.  They boast the best turnover margin in the country, forcing 25 total and giving up only 7.  Their strength has been stopping the run as they’re currently allowing only 3.3 ypc.  If you’re interested in betting college football, Bookmaker has you covered with a 20% Deposit BONUS.

South Florida had to overcome a major hurdle this season when senior QB Matt Grothe was lost for the year in the 3rd game of the season.  QB B.J. Daniels is a redshirt freshman and has filled in for him nicely.  He’s thrown 10 td’s to 6 int’s but his biggest contribution has come in the running game.  He currently leads the team in rushing with 519 yards and 4 td’s.  Against WVU last week, he threw for a career high 232 yards and 3 scores while running for another 104 yards in the 30-19 upset.  Daniels is looking to lead the charge against the Scarlet Knights, who have won the last three meetings.

Defensively South Florida has held opponents to 16 total td’s as well.  Their strength has been the against the pass, due in large part to the pressure that’s been put on opposing QB’s by two stellar defensive ends.  Junior Jason Pierre-Paul and George Selvie have combined for 17 tackles for a loss and find ways to disrupt the flow of offenses.  As a unit they’re giving up 315 ypg and match up well against Rutgers.

With a spread of 1 point, either of these teams is very capable of winning the game.  USF hasn’t had much luck against the Scarlet Knights.  Last year they were blown out at home 49-16 in a game where they committed 6 turnovers.  Rutgers has proven they’re a team that takes advantage of the takeaway column, and this year they have the home field advantage.  However, they haven’t had to face dual threat B.J. Daniels, and he’s the reason the Bulls walk out of Rutgers with a win.  For more expert college football picks check out Betfirms.
