Southern Miss Football Predictions 2009

Written July 3, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Southern Miss Football PredictionsWith eight starters returning on both sides of the ball, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles are a serious contender to win the C-USA’s East Division. They have two players on offense that are capable of winning the C-USA Offensive Player of the Year award in RB Damion Fletcher and WR DeAndre Brown. This is a team that scored 30.6 points/game while allowing just 24.1 points/game last season. They forced 13 more turnovers than their opponents as well. Those numbers should only improve this season with so much talent and experience back. Sportsbook.com offers reduced juice on Friday’s! This book will have their college football lines posted early so you can get your bets in and take advantage of the best available odds.

Offense: The Golden Eagles return four starters on the offensive line, a 1,000-yard rusher, a 1,000-yard receiver and a QB who shattered the school’s freshman passing records last season. Combined, this unit led USM to a single-season record with 5,636 yards of total offense. Now everyone should be on the same page in Larry Fedora’s second season as head coach. Senior back Damion Fletcher led C-USA with 1,313 rushing yards, his third consecutive 1,000-yard season. He is already the school record holder in rushing yards, and he’s likely to break Sammy Winder’s school touchdown mark of 39 early in the season. Fletcher has scored 36 career touchdowns and he’s the key piece that allows Fedora’s system to flourish. But he was suspended in spring workouts, using that time to try and get back in the coach’s good graces.

Sophomore DeAndre Brown led all freshmen with 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was the top receiving prospect in the nation coming out of high school and the prize of Fedora’s first recruiting class, but a broken leg in the bowl game is the only thing that slowed this kid down. He missed spring ball but should return to form in the fall. The Eagles have solid depth at receiver, with Gerald Baptiste returning after catching 35 balls for 460 yards last year. Redshirt freshman Quentin Pierce showed promise in the spring. Sophomore QB Austin Davis threw for 3,128 yards and 28 touchdowns in his freshman season, while committing just 8 interceptions. Back on the offensive line are Ryan Hebert, Cameron Zipp, Micah Brown and Kyle Burkhart.

Defense: Even with Gerald McRath leaving early to enter the NFL Draft as a linebacker, the Eagles still return eight starters, including each member of the secondary. Free safety Eddie Hicks and strong safety Justin Wilson are back after each recorded four interceptions apiece last season. Southern Miss ranked fourth in C-USA in rushing defense and didn’t allow an opponent to gain more than 100 yards on the ground in any of their final five games.

Returning on the line are nose tackle Anthony Gray, a second-team all-league pick last season, and ends Deddrick Jones and Roshaad Byrd. Redshirt freshman Willie Packer had a good spring game with six tackles, and should figure into the end rotation this fall. Hard-hitting Martez Smith is the lone returnee at linebacker, but he’ll get some help from Hendrick Leverette, a transfer from Pearl River Community College in Mississippi, and sophomore Korey Williams.
