Kansas at Southern Miss

This Friday the Kansas Jayhawks will travel away from home to take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. After a shocking 6-3 loss against North Dakota State to start the season, Kansas surprised everyone by beating No.15 Georgia Tech 28-25 at home. The Golden Eagles also got their first win of the season last Saturday, as they took down Prairie View A&M 34-7 at home. If you are interested in what the odds are on the game this weekend, the oddsmakers currently have the Golden Eagles 5.5-point favorites over the Jayhawks.

I was very impressed with the way Kansas responded from their opening week loss, as I wasn’t giving them much of a chance at all to beat Georgia Tech last Saturday. After failing to do anything on offense against North Dakota State, head coach Turner Gill decided it was time to make a change at quarterback. Redshirt freshman Jordan Webb replaced Kale Pick, and responded by throwing for 179 yards and three touchdowns.

Webb wasn’t the only freshman making some noise on Saturday for the Jayhawks, as freshman James Sims was equally impressive in his first start. Sims carried the ball 17 times for 101 yards and a touchdown, and what once looked like a offense that was doomed for the season, now has a lot of life and confidence heading into the first road game of the season.

Southern Miss was blown out in their first game of the season against a very good South Carolina team, but the offense didn’t actually play all that bad, as the racked up over 400 yards of total offense against the Gamecocks. Last week against Prairie View the offense continued to roll, as the Golden Eagles finished with 464 yards of offense.

The Golden Eagles struggled to get the run game going against South Carolina, but that was not the story against Prairie View, as Southern Miss ran the ball 47 times for 253 yards. Redshirt freshman Kendrick Hardy led the way with 86 yards on 20 carries. It will be interesting to see if the success continues this weekend against Kansas, or if it was simply just a result of playing a pretty bad football team.

Looking at the Odds: Forget what happened to Kansas in the first week of the season, they are without question the better football team in this game. I believe they will not only be able to move the ball against the Golden Panthers, but I believe their defense is good enough to keep this game from even being close. The fact that they get 5.5-points makes this one of the best plays you will find all week in college football!

The Jayhawks are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 games in September, and a solid 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games. My final score prediction is Kansas 31, Southern Miss 20.
