Michigan State vs. Wisconsin Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written October 28, 2008 by Jason Lowry

With both Penn State and Ohio State out of action this weekend, one of the key Big 10 games of the weekend takes place in East Lansing where the Michigan State Spartans get ready to host the Wisconsin Badgers. The Spartans sit 4-1 in the Big 10 after their latest win over in-state rival Michigan, and are tied for 2nd in the standings. On the other hand the Badgers finally got a win in conference play, as they were able to hold off Illinois last week at home 27-17. The oddsmakers got the Spartans as 4.5 point favorites over the Badgers at Sportsbook.com

The Badgers have lost both their road games this season in Big 10 play, and if they want to finish at .500 in conference play, they have to win this game. Now there is no question the Badgers have had it rough this season with the way their schedule has rolled out, but no one though this team was going to be just 4-4 at this point. Last week it was all quarterback Dustin Sherer who threw for 174 yards and 2 scores, and had 9 rushes for 40 yards and another score. Sherer will have to be on his game again this week, as they will likely have to keep pace with a solid Spartan offense.

The Badgers defense really played well last week, as they were one of very few teams that have been able to hold Juice Williams in check, as Williams had 3 interceptions and was able to gain just 4 yards on the ground, where he is normally very dangerous. The Bagers will have to be solid against the run again this week, as the Spartans have one of the best backs in the Big 10 in Javon Ringer. Bet Wisconsin + 4.5 at Sportsbook.com

The Spartans really answered well with a big win at Michigan, after being beat up at home by Ohio State the previous week. Ringer was on his game against the Wolverines, as he racked up 194 yards on the ground, and had two big touchdown on top of that. Brian Hoyer was solid throwing the football, as he put up 282 yards and had 3 touchdown passes to 3 different receivers. The key will be how the Spartans adjust if they are unable to move the football on the ground.

The Spartans defense did give up 3 scores for 21 points, but when it mattered in the 4th quarter, they shutdown the Wolverines offense and kept them from putting any more points on the board. The Spartans made the Wolverines try and beat them through the air, as they gave up just 88 yards on the ground, and that played out just as planned, as Michigan quarterback Steven Threet had 3 interceptions. Look for the Spartans to play much stronger at home on this side of the ball this week, and make this game a battle from start to finish. Bet Michigan State -4.5 at Sportsbook.com
