Sports Betting Preview: 12/29

Written December 29, 2008 by Jack Jones

Monday, December 29th should be a pretty good day for sports betting as there are a couple of bowl games paired up with a full slate of NBA betting opportunities. Let’s take a look.

Bowl Action

The Papa John’s.com Bowl takes place early with kickoff scheduled for 3 PM EST. It will be the Wolfpack from NC State taking on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. North Carolina State came on strong to close the season with four straight wins after starting off the year 2-6. In the last game of the season the Wolfpack defeated the Miami Hurricanes 38-28. Rutgers didn’t get off to a great start either when they were sitting at 1-5, but after six straight wins, including a 63-14 blowout of Louisville in their last contest, the sportsbooks have pegged them as the team to beat in this one. Rutgers is listed as a 6.5 point favorite with the total set at 56.5. Check out the latest college football odds to see any updates as the day progresses.

The later game is the Alamo Bowl taking place at 8 PM EST when the Missouri Tigers take on the Northwestern Wildcats. It was a disappointing season for Tigers fans as this team ended up 9-4 overall, finishing the season with back-to-back losses against Kansas and Oklahoma. Northwestern is sitting at 9-3 after having finished their season off with wins over Michigan and Illinois. Even with similar records the odds makers still have Missouri listed as a 12.5 point favorite with the total set at 66.5.

NBA Action

The Atlanta Hawks will be looking to extend their four game winning streak on Monday night when they host the Denver Nuggets. Atlanta is coming off a 129-117 win at home against the Bulls that brought the team to 19-10 on the year. The Orlando Magic will make a trip to Detroit to face the Pistons in order to seek their eighth straight victory. This team has came on strong and now sits on top of the Southeast division at 24-6.

There are six other NBA being played on Monday: Chicago at New Jersey, Memphis at Minnesota, Washington at Houston, Philadelphia at Utah, Toronto at Golden State and Phoenix at Oklahoma City. NHL Schedule

The San Jose Sharks are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday and will be looking to bounce back at Dallas. The Sharks still should be a heavy favorite though as they are 27-4-4 on the year. The Stars are coming off a tough 4-3 win against the Ducks on Saturday. There are five more NHL games for Monday: Montreal at Florida, Minnesota at Calgary, Nashville at Colorado, Columbus at Los Angeles and the Isles and Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

NCAA Basketball

The best game on the college hoops slate for Monday finds the No. 2 ranked Connecticut Huskies playing host to the No. 12 Georgetown Hoyas in Big East action. More Top 25 teams in action are LA Lafayette vs. No. 16 Tennessee, Temple vs. No. 18 Villanova, Central Connecticut State vs. No. 20 Arizona State, Portland State vs. No. 21 Baylor, and North Carolina Central vs. No. 24 Michigan.
