Spurs Slow Start
Written December 18, 2009 by Jack Jones
Did the San Antonio Spurs go out and spend a bunch of money this past offseason on two players past their primes? Head coach Gregg Popovich doesn’t think so, and is attributing his team’s 13-10 slow start to them trying to find their rhythm and getting everyone on the same page according to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News.
I wouldn’t be too worried about San Antonio just yet anyway, as this is a team that has notoriously picked up the pace after the All-Star break in years past. Both Antonio McDyess and Richard Jefferson have been improving, and McDyess has always been a better second half performer anyway.
Jefferson is only averaging 13.4 points per game with the Spurs, his lowest total since his rookie season with the New Jersey Nets, but he has come on strong in four of the last five games.
McDyess is only putting up 5.5 ppg on 46.8% shooting and is only pulling down 5.7 rebounds. The fact that he is 34 has me a little more worried about him than Jefferson, but still if you look at is production last season you’ll see he averaged 7.3 ppg before the All-Star break and 12.1 ppg after it. I think he’ll come around.
