2010-11 Results:

Overall: 11-22 (Home 5-9 Road 4-12 Neutral 2-1 Postseason 2-1)
Atlantic 10: 4-12
Conference Tournament: Lost to Dayton in the Atlantic 10 semi-finals.
Postseason: Did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Phil Martelli guided Saint Joseph to an 11-22 record overall and a twelfth place finish in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Hawks fans are look for better things this year after a 4-2 finish overall including two wins in the conference tournament.

Saint Joseph’s returns four of the five starters from last year’s team, but that might not be great news as they shot only 41.5% from the floor and were out rebounded by 4 boards a game. The Hawks were twelfth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 64.5 points per game and ninth in points allowed per game with 69.7. Last year, the Hawks ranked in the top third in offensive efficiency and free throw shooting. They also protected the basketball well and didn’t turn it over.

On the other hand they didn’t get to the line often and lacked the ability to create second chances. The Hawks will need to shoot better and crash the boards harder this year if they are to improve on their 4-12 conference record of a year ago.

2011-12 Preview

Saint Joseph’s lost their first eight conference games before winning four of their last eight and qualifying for the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.
The Hawks are looking to build on last year’s 4-2 finish with four returning starters which include the nation’s third best shot blocker last year C.J. Aiken.

Backcourt

Carl Jones and Langston Galloway will return to start at guard. Jones was one of the Atlantic 10’s top scorers averaging 17 points per game while shooting 37 percent from beyond the arch.

Galloway is an excellent three point shooter who needs to improve his defensive game. Freshman Chris Wilson will come off the bench to give Jones and Galloway a breather. Fellow freshman Evan Maschmeyer will look to come off the bench and try to spark the offense.

Frontcourt

Aiken will lead the frontcourt after finishing third in block shots in the country. He averaged 7.4 points per game and hopefully as a sophomore will be able to provide more of a scoring touch. Aiken is an interior scorer who shot 50% on jumpers inside the three-point line last year. He will continue to work on elevating his offensive game.

He will be joined in the starting lineup by Ronald Roberts Jr. and Daryus Quarles. Roberts is a tough inside player and his offensive skill set continuous to get better. He averaged 6.4 points a game last year while playing just under 20 minutes a game. Look for Roberts to average double figures in scoring this year.

Quarles was inconsistent in his freshman season and often had poor shot selection. For Saint Joseph to improve he will need to become more comfortable shooting the ball and improve his shot selection.

Halil Kanacevis who transferred from Hofstra will look to crack the lineup after earning All-Rookie honors in the CAA two years ago. He is a 250 pound bruiser that should add some muscle to the frontcourt. Kanacevis is quick inside and is an effective low post option.
