The Sun Devils dispatched of Northern Arizona 30-13 to start of their season, and now they look to get started off on the right foot in conference play with the hopes of earning more than a share of the league title like they took a year ago.
The Cardinal already have one conference win under their belt after taking care of Oregon State 36-28 in week 1 action. Now the team will try to go to 2-0 for the first time in seven years. The last two meetings with the Sun Devils have not been good, both losses and by a combined score of 79-6.
Stanford’s offenese only gained 301 total yards last week against the Beavers, but the team didn’t turn the ball over which is why they grabbed the win. The Cardinal ran for 210 yards, which was surprising for a team that only averaged 110 ypg on the ground last year. The return of Toby Gerhart from knee injury made a big impact, after missing all but one game a year ago with a knee injury Gerhart had 147 yards and two scores against the Beavers.
Tavita Pritchard managed the game well with the rushing attack working so well. He was 10-of-17 with 91 yards and a touchdown, but the key to the game was not having any interceptions.
The Cardinal defense is going to have to improve if they want to keep winning. They allowed 490 yards, but forced a key turnover on the goal line with 47 seconds to go and Oregon State down only eight. That was the third forced turnover of the game to go with a safety and two sacks. You can load your account instantly with your credit card then bet on the Stanford +14 odds at Sportsbook.com.
Arizona State got things going offensively against Northern Arizona last week when they gained 481 yards of total offense. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter shouldered most of the load with 388 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-28 passing. Carpenter could be a Heisman Trophy candidate by the end of the year after throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2007.
Michael Jones caught six of Carpenter’s passes for 162 yards and Kerry Taylor added 93 yards and a score on four grabs. The rushing attack never really got going, which wasn’t surprising since Keegan Herring was sidelined because of a hamstring injury. Arizona State only had 94 rushing yards, and 40 of them were gained by Carpenter.
While the Sun Devil defense wasn’t dominant, they still held Northern Arizona to 308 total yards, 139 rushing and 169 passing. They lacked any big plays through with no forced turnovers and just a pair of sacks. You can bet on Arizona State -14 at BetUS and get a 50% signup bonus on your first deposit.
