Stanford at USC College Football Betting Lines
Written November 12, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Stanford Cardinal have turned into a real contender this season, as evidenced by their impressive win last weekend over the Oregon Ducks. The USC Trojans are still a top notch team, but they aren’t nearly as dominant as they have been over the past few years. It was two years ago that Stanford came to USC as 39 point underdogs and ruined their season. Can Stanford win for a second straight time at USC? Coach Jim Harbaugh has definitely done a great job in turning the Stanford Cardinal from a Pac 10 doormat to a real contender in just a couple of years. The two main players on the offensive side of the football are Toby Gerhart and Andrew Luck. Gerhart is a real workhorse for the team and has rushed for 1,203 yards so far this season, averaging more than 5 yards per carry. Andrew Luck is a prized recruit that was brought in and expected to start and do well from day one, and he has definitely stepped in and done his job as well as you could ever expect. Luck has thrown just 3 interceptions all year and has shown maturity far beyond his years in leading this offense. The Stanford defense is much improved from a year ago and is part of the reason they are now 6-3. The defense is holding opponents to 24.6 points per game and 389 yards per game.
The USC Trojans are definitely still a very good football team, but this year has to be considered a bit of a “down” by their amazing high standards. The team has already lost two games and is clearly out of the national title picture. The offense, which has been one of the top in the nation almost every year, is averaging just 28 points per game this year and isn’t nearly as explosive as normal. Matt Barkley has done a solid job as a true freshman starter, but he has some room to grow and needs to limit his mistakes. The Trojans go to guy right now is running back Joe McKnight who is definitely a game changing type of running back. McKnight is as shifty as they come and averages 6.2 yards per carry this season. The USC defense has been very good this year, but a little inconsistent of late. In back to back games against Oregon State and Oregon they allowed 36 and 48 points. Last week they bounced back by allowing just 9 to Arizona State.
This week’s college football odds show the Trojans as a 10.5 point home favorite in this Pac 10 match up. The posted total has been set at 56 points. If you are looking to make football picks on this game the trends may help you lean in one direction or another. Stanford is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 against USC. The over is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings, but the under is 12-4-1 in USC’s last 17 home games.
The team that takes care of the football and gets their running game going the best will likely win this showdown. USC has to be given the edge at home, but don’t expect Stanford to go down without a fight.
