Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Predictions
Written January 22, 2009 by Jason Lowry

The Steelers are once again headed to the Super Bowl, as they are set to represent the AFC against the Arizona Cardinals. A win will be the 2nd in the last 5 years that this team has won it all, as they took home the trophy in 2005. The Steelers finished the regular season going 12-4 and wound up with the AFC North title and the No.2 seed in the AFC playoff picture. Last year the Steelers also won the North, but did not get a first round bye, and looked dead tired in their home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. This year the Steelers had that much need week to get ready for one last run, and so far they have made the most of it. The Steelers first matchup was against the San Diego Chargers, and while it was close early, the Steelers wound up winning 35-24. In the AFC Championship game the Steelers met up with division rival Baltimore for the 3rd time this season, and for the 3rd time they walked away with a win, as they took home a 23-14 win in one of the hardest hitting playoff games in a long time. For those of you looking to do a little NFL betting on the Super Bowl, the oddsmakers have the Steelers 7 point favorites over the Cardinals at BetUS.com.
Steelers Offense:
This unit has got the job done so far this postseason, as they come in averaging 29 points a game, and while you would expect the damage to come on the ground, the Steelers have just 217 rushing yards to 400 yards through the air. Willie Parker has racked up 193 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, and has done so against two solid defenses, so you have to think Parker is ready for another big day against the Cardinals. Ben Roethlisberger will once again look to lead this team to a Super Bowl victory, and so far so good, as Roethlisberger has completed 56% of his passes for 436 yards and 2 scores, but most importantly he hasn’t turned the football over. Star receiver Hines Ward missed most of the game against the Ravens in the AFC Championship game with a MCL sprain, but still leads the team with 7 catches for 125 yards, and is expected to play against the Cardinals. Santonio Holmes has really been a spark for this team, as he took a punt back for a touchdown against the Chargers, and against the Ravens took a pass 65 yards for a score that gave the Steelers a solid 13-0 lead.
Steelers Defense:
This unit has carried this team all season long, and it will once again have to have a big day if the Steelers want to come out on top. This defense has been statistically the best in the NFL this season, as they are not only great against the run, but can shutdown the passing game as well. A big part of the Steelers attack on this side of the ball is getting after the quarterback, as they have racked up 7 sacks in just two playoff games, including 4 by linebacker LaMarr Woodley, but blitzing the Cardinals has proven to be a little bit of a concern, as the Cardinals have been sacked just 3 times in 3 games, and have killed defenses for sending an extra guy or two at them. We still expect this team to go after Warner, as you can’t let him sit in the pocket or he will eat a defense alive, but it will be interesting to see if they can actually take Warner down in this one.
Lowry’s thoughts on the Steelers Chances:
I like the Steelers to win the Super Bowl, as defense wins championships, but I am not sold on this team running away with this one, as I think the Cardinals will actually cover the spread in this one. If you are looking for a safe wager, bet Pittsburgh Steelers -260 at BetUS.com.
