Steelers at Lions Betting Trends

Written October 7, 2009 by Anthony Moretti

This article will take a look at the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) at Detroit Lions (1-3 SU & ATS) scheduled for Sunday, October 11 at 1 PM ET.  Taking a look at the latest NFL betting odds it shows Pittsburgh at -10.5 with the total list at 44.  If you want to cash in with your NFL betting on this game, then think about signing up for a package of football picks from our handicappers.  Plus, you’ll want to take advantage of the $500 in FREE signup bonus money being offered by BetUS!  If you are going to do your own NFL handicapping, then here is a list of NFL betting trends on this matchup that we have dug up:

  • * PITT has covered one of its last five games
  • PITT has won 11 of its last 14 games SU
  • PITT has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
  • PITT has covered one of its last five road games
  • PITT has won six of its last nine road games SU
  • PITT has played four of its last six road games OVER the total
  • PITT has won six of the last seven meetings SU
  • DET has covered two of its last six games
  • DET has lost 20 of its last 21 games SU
  • DET has played nine of its last 13 games OVER the total
  • DET has covered two of its last 11 home games
  • DET has lost nine of its last ten home games SU
  • DET has played four of its last five home games UNDER the total
  • DET has covered four of the last five meetings

Those Lions fans who got overly excited about their team and thought they might somehow get to the .500 mark on Sunday, not only straight-up but against the NFL lines, were brought down to earth with a second half in which Detroit was outscored 27-3. They nonetheless had a yardage edge of 398-276 in the game, and Matthew Stafford completed 24 out of 38 passes for 296 yards. The Lions had 25 first downs on the day, and had the ball for 36 and a half minutes, but their problem is that they gave up 7.6 yards a carry to the Bears, and only got 30 rushing yards from Kevin Smith.

Now the news – which could be good or bad – is that Stafford has a knee injury. It is the recurrence of a dislocated kneecap injury that he had suffered back in high school. He will probably playing, but if he doesn’t, Daunte Culpepper may have to go, and if he does, he may give this team a better chance in the NFL lines against a team like the Steelers.

Pittsburgh has not been as efficient on offense as you might think. The Steelers are averaging 18.1 yards gained for every point. That, of course, may change since the Lions are allowing 33.5 points a game, and has given up one point for every 10.8 yards they have allowed. It looks like their defense fades in the second half, and that hurts them in the NFL lines.

The Steelers got 165 yards out of Rashard Mendenhall against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night, and that is what they drafted him for. It was a breakout game, but was that an anomaly? If they can get a lot out of him, they will have a chance at a great 1-2 punch between him and Willie Parker, who will miss practice time with a turf toe but should be able to participate.

When you think about, the only thing that would prevent Pittsburgh from being able to do whatever it wanted in this game is if they were let down from the game with San Diego. I don’t really know how excited one can get about laying this many points on the road, but for small recommendation, there really isn’t any other side. We’ll lay the points with Pittsburgh, the 10.5-point favorite in the BetUS NFL lines with one of our NFL picks for this week.
