2012 STP 400 Predictions

Written by -

In last week’s race at Texas Motor Speedway, Gregg Biffle held of Jimmie Johnson for his first win of the season. The victory extended Biffle’s lead in the points standings to 19 over Matt Kenseth. It not only was his first win of the season, but the first in 49 starts dating back October of 2010 at Kansas Speedway. It just so happens the next race on the schedule is the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway.

In the past this track only held a fall race on the Sprint Cup Series, but last year Kansas Speedway received an addition race. Brad Keselowski won the inaugural STP 400 in June of last year. The race this year is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 EST and will be televised nationally on FOX.

For those of you looking to put a little action on who will win, here is a quick look at the three drivers I feel have a great shot at making their way to victory lane.

Jimmie Johnson

It’s only a matter of time before Johnson captures his first win of the season, and I’m not going to miss out on it after backing him the last few weeks. Johnson’s second place finish was the second of the season and his sixth straight finish inside the top 12. The No. 48 car finished 7th at this event last year, but came back and won the fall race. It was his second career win at this event. You can pretty much lock up Johnson to finish inside the top 10 this week. In 11 career starts at Kansas Speedway, only twice has he failed to finish 10th or better.

Greg Biffle

It’s time people started taking Biffle seriously. He is on top of this game right now and is legit threat to win the Chase this year. Biffle has four top 3 finishes in 2012 and has been inside the top 13 every race this season. As good as Johnson has been on this track, Biffle is even better. His 8.3 average finish at Kansas Speedway is tops of all active drivers. He hasn’t finished worse than 12th since 2009 and six of his last nine starts have resulted in a top-3 finish. Biffle last won this race in 2010, but also brought home the checkered flag in 2007.  When you combine how well he is racing right now and his past success on this track, you would be foolish to not take a shot on him this week.

Tony Stewart

It’s hard to explain exactly what happened to the No. 14 car of Stewart last week, but his performance at Texas was extremely disappointing. Stewart was one of the favorites heading into the race, but he wound up 24th. Not exactly what you expect from the the defending Chase champ. However, it’s nothing to panic about if you are a big fan of Stewart. Earlier this season Stewart finished 22nd at the Subway Fresh Fit 500. The following week he won the Kobalt Tools 500. There’s a decent chance he pulls off a similar feat this week. Stewart has two career wins at Kansas Speedway with a respectable 12.2 average finish.
