Super Bowl Betting Pools

It’s no secret that many of us are going to wager on this year’s up coming Super Bowl game. While doing this makes the game fun to watch for you, it really doesn’t do much for those who don’t have money on the game. I am sure many of you have heard of a betting pool, but just incase you haven’t we are going to let you in on a fun way for everyone to have the chance to walk away a winner.

First off lets go over just what a betting pool is and how to set it up.  First off you need to create a grid that is 10×10, this will create 100 individual squares. The easiest way to number your grid is to numerically 0 thru 9, but you don’t have to go in order as long as the numbers 0 thru 9 are all used once. Then you simply pick which team goes on the vertical or horizontal side and you are set.  You can make this table however big you want, but I would suggest using something bigger than your normal piece of paper, such as poster board.

Now that you have the table set up you are ready to start filling in the squares, the best way to do this is set an equal dollar amount for each square. Of course you want to sell all the squares in order to have the most prize money in the end. Many times people will buy more than once square if allowed to increase their chances of winning. Once you have reached 100 participants you randomly assign each person a square.  Note that if works best if you don’t sell more than 100, so that way it keeps it an even playing field.

Now that all the squares are full you can figure out what your numbers are. If you have a 4 for the Patriots and a 3 for the Giants, you want the ending numbers of each teams score to be the numbers you have. So if the final score of the first quarter were New England 14 and New York 3, you would win the prize for the first quarter. If the score was New England 3 and the Giants 14, you wouldn’t win even though you have the same numbers, they are backwards to what you need them to be.

Before the game has started you need to decide how you are going to pay out each quarter. Many people like to make each quarters prize get bigger as it goes, others like to divide the money up and have equal prizes for each quarter. For example if you had each square worth $5, then each quarter would give out $125, or you could start with the first quarter worth $50 and have each quarter go up $50, making the 4th quarter worth $200.  So you can see why this would keep everyone interested in the game and who is winning and losing. While of course everyone can’t be a winner it is possible for one person to take all the money, if his or her numbers hit each quarter. We don’t see that being a problem this year, as we expect both teams to score throughout the game causing the numbers to change frequently. So don’t have people showing up to your party bored, set up a Super Bowl betting pool and get everyone involved!
