As an NFL player or coach your whole season is based on whether or not your team goes to the Super Bowl. The two teams that are able to withstand the grueling season and playoffs are rewarded with a chance to go down in immortality. The winners are not only able to call themselves World Champions, the team is rewarded with the Lombardi trophy and each player is given a customized ring. The ring is something of great importance to those who receive it. The ring is a way of showing everyone else what you have accomplished, and a way to remind yourself what you had to endure in order to have the privilege to wear it.

The ring is usually made yellow or white gold and many times covered in diamonds. The ring usually includes the team name, the team’s logo, the Super Bowl they played in, the year they won, and the words world champion. Other things that the rings may include is a new trend to use larger diamonds to show how many times the team’s franchise has won the Super Bowl. Some teams may include the score of the game or the picture of the Lombardi trophy. The rings are something that each team can decide just how they look which gives each and every Super Bowl victory a special meaning, as no two rings will ever look the same.

The NFL will cover up to $5,000 of the rings value up to 150 rings for each team. Any thing over the $5,000 will have to be paid for by the team’s owners. While the actual prices of the rings are something that ring companies don’t want to make public. Recent rings have been appraised for over $20,000. The manufacture of the ring is completely up to whom the team chooses. Many are manufactured by Jostens or the Balfour Company based in TX, last years Super bowl winner decided to have theirs manufactured by their home town company Herff Jones. Because the winning teams customize the rings, they usually aren’t given out for a few months after the game. Some teams may hold a public or private ceremony.

Some other interesting facts about the Super Bowl Ring are that players from the losing team also receive a ring up to a certain amount. The league doesn’t put out as much money as they do for those who actually win the game. Charles Haley has the most rings as a player with 5. While others might have more rings as a coach Haley is the only one to get 5 as a player. He won two with the San Fransisco 49ers and three with the Dallas Cowboys. Ken Norton Jr. is the only player to win 3 consecutive rings. He won one with the 49ers and two with the Cowboys. New England’s coach Bill Belichick is going for his sixth ring as a coach, when the Patriots square off against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
