Super Bowl XLIII Line Moves

Written January 22, 2009 by Jack Jones

arizona-cardinals-011909lThe Super Bowl XLIII odds have been posted for only six days now but sportsbooks everywhere have adjusted the line from the opening number of 6.5 up to 7. This is of some importance because seven is a key number for football betting due to it being equal to a touchdown.

Nearly 67% of the early Super Bowl betting action has come on the Steelers so far, and with this being the largest wagering event of the season the sportsbooks want to make sure they get that action as balanced as possible.

With the odds set so close to a key number there are a number of bettors who will be buying or selling points, meaning they will take the Cardinals at +7 or +7.5 with higher juice or buying the Steelers down to -6.5. Odds makers everywhere are starting to get nervous about a worse case scenario, which would be a seven point Pittsburgh victory. The books would probably lose out pretty big on this situation, and would refund so many player wagers that the profits would be dismal.

So far there hasn’t been any sharp action on the game, and that is to be expected with the bye week still on the horizon. As the game approaches you can probably expect the line to move another half point or so, as more and more people throw down on the game.

The Super Bowl total has also seen some movement going from 47 at the opener to 46.5 now. The majority of past Super Bowl total wagers have come on the under, which is surprising since on Monday nights and with the major bowl games you usually see the public pounding the over.
