Sweet Sixteen Picks & Predictions: Syracuse vs Oklahoma
Written March 23, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Oklahoma Sooners get ready to face one of the nations hottest teams in Syracuse. This in my opinion is the most even of all the Sweet Sixteen games. The Sooners are led by the best player in college basketball period, Blake Griffin. The future 1st overall pick in this summers NBA Draft will be counted on by his team for his usual big game dominance. They will need it now more then ever as they face a very big and strong Syracuse team. Taylor Griffin will also be counted on in a big way to shut down high rising forward Rick Jackson. That will be a very physical match up. Now, to the guards for these teams. There will be talent everywhere you turn. The Freshman Phenom Willie Warren puts in 15 points and collects 3 assists per game while Tony Crocker and Austin Johnson are key shooters and defenders for this team. Jonny Flynn may very well be the most explosive point guard in the country for the Orange averaging 17 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assist per game along side senior leader Eric Devendorf who averages 15 points and three point specialist Andy Rautins who puts in 10 points per game off the bench. When you break down the statistics for this game, as I did, you would see how bad of a draw Oklahoma is for The Cuse. While Syracuse averages only a single point per game more then Oklahoma, The Sooners shoot better from the field and from the free throw line while also giving up less points against and having a slight edge in rebounding. Syracuse has beaten Stephen F. Austin and Arizona State while their counter-part Oklahoma defeated Morgan State and Michigan. Both teams have won their two games by double digits in each. Below I will break down who has the edge per position. For anyone who wants to bet on NCAA basketball, the college basketball odds on the game are Oklahoma -1 over Syracuse with the total placed at 154 points.
Point Guard: Jonny Flynn vs Austin Johnson (EDGE-SYRACUSE) While Johnson has been superb for Oklahoma as he contributes in just about every statistical category, Flynn has emerged as not only in my mind the nations premier point guard, but one of the best players.. However, I do feel Johnson will play him well.
Shooting Guard: Eric Devendorf vs Willie Warren (EDGE-OKLAHOMA) Devendorf is a senior leader with experience and big game pedigree. He will be going up against what I see is the worst possible match up for him out of any shooting guard in the land. The fabulous freshman Warren is an explosive combo guard who starts at the SG spot. He can shoot, run the court and will be way to fast for Devendorf. Bad situation here for the Cuse.
Small Forward: Paul Harris vs Tony Crocker (EDGE-EVEN) The most even match up of them all. Harris is a better defender while Crocker is a better shooter. Harris is more athletic and stronger while Crocker has much better vertical movement and his footwork is smoother. They both are key parts to their teams success because when they play well its an extra weapon. Dead even here I have it.
Power Forward: Rick Jackson vs Taylor Griffin (EDGE-OKLAHOMA) Jackson has been playing big time ball for Syracuse. He had 13 points and 8 rebounds against Arizona State which was a big boost, but similar to Devendorf vs Warren, this is an awful match up vs Taylor Griffin who can shoot from the perimeter. Syracuse could find their zone to be rather ineffective if Taylor is shooting well. Jackson can not defend outside the paint. Dangerous match up for Cuse again as I don’t see Taylor Griffin having a hard time keeping Jackson off the offensive boards.
Center: Arinze Onuaku vs Blake Griffin (EDGE-OKLAHOMA) Onuaku is a very strong and tough big man who is powerful like an ox. In this game, it wont mean a darn thing. Blake will be able to body him, Onuaku has no shot to do anything productive against Blake on the defensive end. Blake Griffin will get him into foul trouble early, then whoever Boheim brings in will be ineffective. The athletic, strong, talented and smart player of the year in Griffin drives Arinze wild in this aspect.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: Syracuse is 9-1 in their last 10 games against the spread overall. Oklahoma is 10-4 in their last 14 games ATS as a favorite overall. Oklahoma has the answers for Syracuse while The Orange do not for the Sooners. Oklahoma will win this game and advance to the elite eight where they will meet UNC in what I expect to be an instant classic. Take Oklahoma as this is once again my friend, JORDAN’s BEST BET. Last best bet I had was Oklahoma -6.5 vs Michigan (Final was 73-63 OU)
Betting Line: Oklahoma -1
Jordan’s Pick: Take Oklahoma -1 (BEST BET)
Documented Record:
14-13 OVERALL
6-4 BEST BET

Got something to say?

Who is this guy spitting out nonsense? Do you know that SU plays zone so they don’t have to chase your Oklahoma Sooners (Griffin/Griffin and Warren) around the court and they will hacking the poop out of Griffin (the good one). You talk about the Sooners as if they all All-Stars in the NBA already. Get a grip and get over your love for Oklahoma. I think OU wins this one if they are able to shoot well, but it’s not such a sure thing as Jordan makes it sound unfortunately. I predict at least two SU big men fouling out of this one with many more in foul trouble. SU will have a fan advantage only because UNC will be rooting for the underdog which is SU so that should help in the intangible column.
Reply
Agree with above comment. The match-up break down means nothing as Cuse will not be playing man-to-man. This is especially true in the case of Devendorf… an edge to the Sooners?! This guy has been arguably the most consistent and clutch player in the country in the last few weeks. Same goes for Griffin/Onuaku analysis… Onuaku will not be the only one defending him, and fouls will be spread out amongst the center of the zone. While Pendergraph is no Griffin, note what happened to him in the ASU/Cuse game. The key to this game will be who can effectively establish an inside-out game… and it will be hard fought.
Reply
Zone or man to man is not relevent. When you are a big man that has range and you are being guarded by a big man who can not face up and play defense you will have one heck of a problem. When Blake griffin gets the ball down low Onuaku still will be bodying him up. That will do two things. Get Arinze in foul trouble as well as provide wide open jumpers frm the outside on kick outs.
Dan Dooley, you basically agreed with everything I said just not the way it will happen. If you do not like the way I praise Blake Griffin that would confuse me a bit. Oklahoma will win this game and after they do you’ll come back, read this again and see why.
Jeff, Once again I am unsure if you are grasping the true effect of the zone D and my point on the match up break downs. Those are to predict who I believe will have the better game and bigger impact for their team. Willie Warren is quicker and I see him causing Devendorf to get rattled (as we all know he has in the past)
I appreciate your comments and interst in my work

tHIS is actually great matchup for orangemen. OU has only 2 players averaging in double figures. SU had 5 in double figures vs ASU, which they dispatched quite easily. Should Griffen not have HUGE game ,SU has many more options to go to and can withstand off games from even 2 or 3 of their key players. OU has shot inconsistently all year from beyond the arc, while SU marksmen are peaking now. Plus, SU zone has always given big 12 teams fits—it will be no different here. SU will win this game, and with a comfortable margin.
Reply
Hey bud sorry but talking one on one match ups is far off
syracuse plays 2-3 zone and there wont be one on one math ups. Like you said devendorf is too slow for this oklahoma guard haha we’ll see. Some of oklahomas averages might be higher think about it syracuse plays in a little tougher league i would say. so just take that into consideration. Blake Griffen is an amazing player but he hasnt played the big men from the big east. Also flynn will tear apart oklahomas guards and so will Devendorf. Haha all of you from oklahoma will see just like in 2003.
Reply
And just so you know zone or man is relevant haha. Obviously you know nothing about syracuse. Get up in devendorfs face he will just light you up that much more bud. Gooood Luuuckk
Reply
Tyler,
Something I believe you are not taking into consideration is the fact that When the Cuse plays zone it is to not acount for one man specificaly. Now, against ASU that worked wonders because Harden was a no show. If yopu believe Blake will be one then yes you are right, The Orange will win. One thing I do not believe you have realized in the spead and quickness of OU’s guards can most certainly match up and run with SU. Thats a fact, Willie Warren is just as quick and can shoot the lights out with Devendorf like I stated we all know what happens when he gets rattled. When Blake is behind bodies by Onuaku, Jackson or whoever else they may use. The zone will be CRACKED. When you can not guard someone in the post you need weak side help, which will elave open shooters. If OU shoots well from the field, they will win for sure. I love the comments guys, keep them coming and I will always respond with my logic behind my work. I also appreciate the polite responses, keeping it kosher is what we are about here at betfirms lol.

Jordan, save your money–or loan it to some AIG exec or something. SU has already beaten Kansas in Kansas City [1st time that has happened in 30 yrs]. Boeheim’s record against Big 12 is off the charts. SU has played MUCH tougher schedule, faced similar big man in Harangody and prevailed even though he got his numbers. Plain facts are OU does not shoot well against much weaker competition. SU les-ads nation in defense vs 3 pt shots. They will struggle all day in this one. See how you feel at halftime with your -1 when OU is down 16.
Reply
Jeff,
Are you really going to try to compare Harangody’s supports cast to Blake Griffin’s? I do not think that argument is one youd win. now, your points are well made. I fully acknowledge that Cuse has faced a tougher schedule and their zone was effective against Kansas. Something you might want to consider is when you can not post guard a big man in a zone D, you must have weakside help. That leaves wipe open jumpers for guys like Crocker, Johnson and Warren who will be a ahndful as it is. We saw what OU did late in the game against Michigan who plays a zone as well. Not the same zone and I am in no way trying to compare Michgians athlete’s to Syracuse, but Capel knows how to break Zone defenses. I believe Oklahoma will exploit this zone. This my friend is what makes this business so wonderful, two different points with extreme passion. If you get a chance make check my UNC vs Zaga article as well as the East region that i will have up shortly. Thanks to all for the comments

Jordan–I guess my main argument here is that SU is CLEARLY a superior team. OU has no guards to compare with the Flynn /Devendorf /Rautins combo, and IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE! Devendorf just finished setting the all-time Big East tourney scoring record and [even though it didn't count], his buzzer three is typical of the clutch shooting all 3 SU guards are continually displaying. You cannot possibly compare Capel’s record in big games vs Boeheim’s. But, MOST OF ALL, you cannot measure HEART. This SU team has it in spades, and like it or not, they have been the America’s team of this year. Nothing complicated here–just clear mismatch. You will see same when Nova takes apart Duke
Reply
Jeff, I appreciate your comment and opinions once again. I disagree with you strongly in terms on how the outcome will be as you will see in my duke/nova article coming out by tonight I disagree strongly with you there as well. SU has tons of heart all over the court and nobody is comparing Boheim to Capel. The two teams will settlew these points on the court this week.

Jordan–You think duke [finally pulled away from Carolina matches up well with Nova? You probably are very nice man but you are clueless when it comes to comparing hoop teams and it will show, after this weekend, that you might consider some other vocation. Honestly, Jordan—You are totally lost and soon you may have to admit it.
Reply
Jeff- if you want to post like a mature adult I would love to have you comment on my work, if not ill have you removed from posting all together. Duke will be able to guard Nova’s big men as Nova will not be able to guard Duke’s. After you are wrong perhaps you can be a big enough man to apologize. Once again, if you want to post like an adult I would love to have you comment on MY work. If not, ill have you removed.
thanks,
Jordan
Reply
Jordan-I said you are probably a very nice man–The brackets finally moved Duke from Carolina–Duke has only 1 true athlete [Henderson] while Nova is loaded. Nova played a REDICULOUSLY tougher schedule [as this tourney's results have already born out].Are you seriouly saying Duke has played the equal in competition? I’m not being rude here, and yes, I will readily admit if I am wrong. But right now, before these games are played, I truly feel that you are so wrong as to be a great reverse barometer for someone looking to make wager. And to threaten being removed because someone STRONGLY disagrees with your opinions is nothing but petty.

Jeff,
As stated numerous times, I not only enjoy good healthy debate, I appreciate you taking time and commentins on my work. However, comments such as the ones you made in your previous post are not acceptable nor appropriate. Our points were both well made, fans like yourself are the reason our site is as successful as it is and once again, I love the debate. Please keep it in an adult manner and i look forward to many more discussions.

remember also Jeff, If Nova does not shoot well, they do not have the defense to hold strong as Duke does. These games will be very intense and filled with intensity. I fully expect your apology when OU and The Dukies prevail lol. If for some reason i am wrong. you’ll post your email addy and I personall will give you a letter with credit.

Likewise, Jordan –This has been fun debate and you will get a humble posting if I’m wrong. Promise.–I see this Duke team as easily being the least talented bunch he has ever had overall, and quite the opposite for Nova. I believe Nova will outquick them and outshoot them—BY Large margins. We can agree to disagree, as gentlemen. To inject a bit of humor here, I’m saying hoops Godfather Coach K will be forced to say postgame “Look how they Massacred my boys”

I think this will be a game that is decided by blake . if he gets less tha 20 point they will lose. Oklahoma has never played against a zone like the cuse has. he will be trapped all day. I predict syracuse by 6

Oklahoma IS Blake Griffin
Reply
I predict syracuse by double digits.
why?
Yea syracuse has 2 big men Jackson and onuaku but your forgetting somebody… Kristoff… he is a very tough player and body his way in to get rebounds. I think it will be a great game but syracuse has the edge.

Jeff,
well picked. I hit the pitt/X under and was primed for this game. i was off, well done. Ill be back for my revenge with the Oklahoma sooners tomorrow.

Jordan–would bake you nice big humble pie, but things going so well I don’t care to rub it in.. [Coach K is searching for Bonasera as we speak, though] I went 4 for 4, making my biggest play of year on money line that Missou would win on court. Memphis was easily second phoniest team in final 16 after Duke. St Johns, Rutgers, Notre Dame and 30 other teams in tourney would have 30 wins with their schedule. They will lose Evans to NBA so they will be an even worse 28 win team next year. I’m not sure how to locate your site tomorrow but I hope I can. Hoops are all about better athles, chemistry, and schedule/performance comparisons and I really cannot believe You fail to see this, instead trying to compare “matchups” player vs player, which so far have not exactly impressed, Maybe foot ball is your game.

Jeff,
I myself had Missouri winning the game as well as the under in the pitt/X game as well as uconn. So a 3-1 today wont exactley be shying away my clients my man lol. Till the OU/Cuse game, talk to you then

I respect the business and how it works and you dont. You are a fun guy to debate with and i love the fact you take spare time to comment on my work. You may post all you could post (as the fan) all you would like on my work if you choose from this point on and I will gladly leave that post up if it is appropriate. From this point on I will not being commenting back. I am a pro. I understand you USED to be a lot of things. If you want to comment on my work you will do it respectfuly or it will be removed. I have come across many generabl public fans who call a game and get all gaga like yourself. I love a good debate and always take RESPECTFUL criticism as a plus. You, are not a benefit to either of those points. Good luck with the rest of your games and if any of your posts are respectful, ill gladly leave them up.

Jordan–You have a vocation predicting the outcome of ballgames—Good for you—10 years ago I was part of a group based out of NY and Las Vegas known as the “computer group”. Maybe you heard of us. The newspapers wrote several pieces on this group, entitled The gang that broke Vegas. No sports book in Vegas would put out their lines until allowing us to act on them first. Then they adjusted their lines accordingly. When we made a major play, the line would move sometimes as much as 3 points. So once again, I cocede nothing in “expertise” to you or any other prognosticator. No offense meant. I wish you well with your “clientele”. But this is not my first time around the block and I’d gladly compare resume’s.I believe the groups 5 year run netted somewhere around 200 million.

This is my work, I love the fact that you find it important to comment as this is what makes the business what it is. However, if you can not do it respectfuly, do not comment. I have ethics and morals. Their are ways to win and ways to lose. You may not, that is more then fine. Best of luck,

Jordan,—As you now realize, both of us have been prognosticators professionally. For the last 20 years, I’ve been doing this primarily for myself. Spent maybe 10 years doing this for “group”. I have no idea how old you may be. I’ve been doing this for 35 years, quite sucessfully. Haven’t needed to rely on paycheck or commissions. So for me it’s just natural to enjoy debates or even disagreements as to the strenghths/ outcomes of sporting events. As you said, it is healthy to have such debates. If there were no difference of opinions, we both would be out of business, so to speak. You know I have SU as my best tomorrow, and you have opposite. Nothing wrong with that. My next best tomorrow would be Kansas—young -talented-and improving. No small task vs always physical MSU, but I believe this to be by far the worst year for Big 10, and this is not MSU’s best.KU to outquick and outshoot Spartans, possibly by decent margin. Looking for louisville to prevail in hardfought, possibly low-scoring game–Will pass on this one. NC vs Gonzaga most interesting game of day. Both teams talented, however both overrated in my view. If Gonzaga gets off to decent start, I look for game to be close throughout, and would take points—small wager. Their is always the possibility for inconsistent shooting NC to get fast start, with their quicker /better athletes to get fast break going. If they are hitting 3s, will be long day for Gonzaga. Hansbrough most overrated big man in recent years–poor footwork–travels and fouls often–those will be called in Memphis. Would tend to think this may be primarily half-court game, where Gonzaga matches up well. Small play with dog. GL tomorrow

Hey Jordan, Just to point out i believe you just don’t like the big east. Thats just what i think not trying to be rude. Duke was deffinately over rated along with memphis. Duke playing in a weaker conference along with Oklahoma gets people thinking they are better than they are as a “whole team” Blake is a very good player but Syracuse has played the best big men all year. Good Luck to you tonight. We will see who comes out on top.

Jordan– Thanks for kind response–there is plenty of room for mutual respect for those of us who rely on success in this business to make living. I passed on Loisville because I just think that game can have so many different scenarios. If Cats decide to try to run wih Cards, or if Cards pressure forces up tempo–That game WILL go over. Pitino great strategist, with Williams /Clark sure fire Pros, would love up tempo. Feel Arizona back to their “a” game, will try to avoid. If it does go over, Loisville will cover. Juast too many “ifs” in tis one for me”. Kansas/MSU game likely under, I would agree {MSU can’t score–Has NO chance if it goes over].I just think Kansas straight up safer play.We both like Zags [YEAH] , but I’m a bit worried incinsistent outside shooters from Nc could get off to fast start–Gonzaga not a good come-from -behind type.So small play for me. Would be interested what you feel about Hansbrough and all the hype surrounding him–I REALLY think he is overrated–big time. And, of course, we are on oppsite sides with our best bets in SU/OU game. But , once again, Good luck—Isn’t this the greatest time of year for us?–This is both fun and exciting.

Jeff,
Ditto, their is no better time (bowl season for college FB i’d argue is equal). I agree with every assesment you gave on of course all games besides OU/SU. I was leaning towards Arizona, however i found way to many reasons on why they could not cover. The reason why i like the over so much in this game is because both teams have scoring big men that are agile. Hill and Samuels are athletic and finish around the hoop. I do think kansas will win, However both teams can and will score in the half court sets with star big men and depth in those respective positions. i appreciate the good communication and look forward to productive post game conversation.

I have to tell you, Jordan–Our dozen or so back and forths over these games has really made the weekend more interesting. It has me considering coming out of retirement next hoops season and applying for column with one of these services. I pass on baseball–ever since computer group disbanded in 1987. That, I believe, would be fascinating story to you. Basically, it was founded by the most sucessful gambler to ever come to Vegas [will avoid names]. His untimely passing in December 2007 left an estate of approx 200-300 million [you probably know who I am talking about].Anyway, he found and collaborated with a MIT computer genius who figured out a way to includ EVERY POSSIBLE stat of all games [in football, hoops and baseball]. Then the computer would have these teams play each other 20000 times in a matter of minutes. Then–The group would compare outcomes vs the line and the biggest disparities would be the biggest plays. It made millionaires of about 20 members [one then purchased Las Vegas Country Club]. Thought you might find it interesting.

Before moving my profession to handicapping/journalism I handled client relations for a sports agency called team entertainment Inc. You name him, I’ve met him. I learned a lot of things come with this business, the main one I will always follow is…respect it. Win right and lose right. If you do those two things you’ll always be in good habits. Jordan–congrats on 2 for 2 start. Instead of passing on Loiusville/arizona as originally planned, I decided you wre right–this game had to go over–and as I mentioned–if that were case–Loiusville would have to cover–so I managed to cash parley there-thanks partially at least to you–so thanks there. Now tempted to play OU no matter who wins NC/Gonzaga. Afraid OU will not come close to their 3 pt bombs in next though–that’s just hoops. Well, were even on the big ones. Still able to show healthy profit for weekend with any luck. Will be well plus no matter what with money line cash on missouri. Hope you go 4 for 4. Good Luck

Jeff,
I Appreciate the vote of confidence on on the Lville/Zona OVER. If reference to the OU game. It basically went not as expected. Keep in mind, I of course did not see them blowing them to bits. However, as stated a zone is confetti when you have shooter from all positions. Taylor was dominant like i thought and Blake Griffin, well, hes a mechanic freak. Nice job on your parlay. Ill have my picks for tomorrow done by midnight and they should be out by tmrw early AM. Yes OU was hot, but they are the better team. Dukies Scheyer and Henderson will not shoot 4-31 every night, regardless, Nova IS BETTER. Enjoy the rest of the games, we will be in contact throughout.

Well, Jordan–poor finish to great weekend. Both experienced tough beats in MSU/Kansas. Still–best 5 for eight I’ve ever had with parlay and money line bet that equaled 3 teamer. Initial thoughts in NC vs OU are either take OU with pts or look at over. Don’t fully trust Crocker [who was ! for 23 from beyond the arc before tonite while Devendorf/Rautins combo was 49% last 6 game[minus Stephen Austin] before their 0 for 9 hole they left SU in.Call me tubborn but that game was a case of 1 team unusually hot vs 1 team unusually cold. It happens–aloss is a loss and OU was the much better team ON THIS NITE. Made just small action bet on Gonzaga–feared that it could get away from them. Louisville deserving solid favoritism over MSU–Probably laying the number there–Can’t get pace read. GL rest of way

Left out other side. Villanova to take down cold shooting Pitt in close one [Pitt peaked about 6 weeks ago--haven't fully recovered ]. U Conn much superior but number may be really high—over a possibility [again, depending on no.]

I hit my play on the MSU/Kansas game as it clearly states on the site under sweet 16 picks. I took the UNDER in that game and layed off Kansas. As far as the ou/su game. Oklahoma is the better team. Simple. It was proven on the court. Not personal, just fact as was nova over duke. The Zags was tough, I blame my self for not seeing that thought. Tonight i finished 3-1 with hitting my best bet in Oklahoma. gl tmrw,

Taking Nova plus 2–no total plays–Nova simply playing bit better now–Pitt struggling for points. Laying 5.5 with Uconn and adding small parlay With Uconn Missouri over.Trying to add to nice +8 dime weekend.

uconn total 150. Trying to hit lightning twice With Louisville, playing parlay -6.5/over 138. Biting on Ou after Friday, got +7.. NC destroyed mismatched Gonzaga [who threw in towel after 10 minutes]. Gave them uncontested shots form wherever, whenever and NC did make most. Have seen them struggle in past from distance, facing superior front line. Then again, I’ve seen Ou 4 times this year [once without Griffin], And I have seen Shooting inconsistencies from them also. [Crocker was 1 for 23 from beyond arc prior to SU game, where he made everything from everywhere. Counting on at least equal shooting Fom OU guards vs NC guards–would be enough to cover if not win outright.

I dont care what Crocker was when you saw him my friend. Whe Nova beat Duke you raved. OU is the better team and they wone xactley how i said. I look forward to continuing these convos but if you do not have the capability to admit where you were wrong or as much as not justify it that will go a long way. Win admirably and lose the same way. You lost your two best bets last night. It happens, by you posting I did also you are not only wrong but it does not give credible justification. I like Nova today as i was sold on them vs Duke. Their athleticism will drive Pitt crazy as they are also much deeper. My picks in my article are clear with the reasons why. Thanks again for the continuing response

Really been phenominal 3 days. Budgeted myself for 4K. With original Villanova double-up, and 3K money line win with Mizzou over memphis. Follwed by 3k parlay cash with Loisville /Arizona. Was able to withstand 2K loss with SU.Only 3 dollar play with shaky Gonzaga.Today, 3k parlay win With UConn/over vs Mizzou,Plus 1K flat win there, And chickened out a bit to 6 dollar play on Nova. Already made those posted plays for tommorrow. Only played 1K on OU [got them at +7] , Have 3k parlay going with Loiusville/Msu over {I realize MSU games generally not high scoring, but feel comfortable they will bite on temptation to run with Cards, and Number was low in my opinion. May buy New Escalade if parley comes through.GL

Like I said in previous posting, OFTEN one team may have UNUSUAL good shooting performance and another may suffer UNUSUAL poor shooting perfolrmance. NC BEGGED OU to try to shoot from beyond arc. They were lucky if they touched rim. Today’s OU performance was MUCH MORE TYPICAL of this club than was Friday Nites. Enough said about that. MSU mirrored earlier Uconn vs Louisville game and outplayed and outcoached them just as Uconn had previously. IT’s been fun
