TCU 2009 College Football Predictions
Written June 30, 2009 by InfoPlays
Only a loss at Utah last year kept the Frogs from their own elusive BCS prize. To help their strength of schedule this season, the TCU Horned Frogs head out east for showdowns against Virginia and Clemson in September. If they can survive a trop to MWC rival BYU in October, they get Utah at home in what could shape up as the conference championship game on November 14th. NCAA football odds have the Frogs listed at +20000 to win the 2010 BCS National Championship.
Offense: A strong nucleus returns from an offense that set single-season records last year for points scored (437) and touchdowns (56). Andy Dalton will be under center again after helping TCU win 19 games the past two seasons. He is already second in school history for completions (404) and passing yards (4,701). Dalton can also make plays with his feet, finding the end zone eight times on the ground a year ago. Dalton has plenty of weapons to work with, as top rusher Joseph Turner and leading pass-catcher Jimmy Young return. They combined for 16 scores in 2008.
The Horned Frogs return all but one wide receiver from last year’s group, which combined to catch 217 balls for more than 2,600 yards and 14 touchdowns. Ryan Christian is a versatile running back who finished second on the team with 30 catches and fourth with 386 rushing yards. He’ll battle it out with Turner for carries. The line is solid on the edges with returning All-Mountain West tackles Marshall Newhouse and Marcus Cannon. Newhouse has started every game at tackle the past two seasons. Cannon is a beat at 6-5, 350 pounds and he made 11 starts a year ago.

Defense: Led by preseason All-American defensive end Jerry Hughes, TCU returns five starters this season and several key reserves form last year’s top-ranked defense in the nation. The Horned Frogs gave up just 11.1 points/game, 217.8 yards/game and 47.1 rushing yards/game in 2008. This team has led the nation on total defense three times in the past nine years. Hughes led the nation with 15 sacks while forcing six fumbles. Helping Hughes will be All-MWC corners Rafael Priest and Nick Sanders, along with linebacker Daryl Washington and safety Tejay Johnson as the other returnees.
Washington is the best all-around athlete on the team who had 63 tackles last year, but he was lost in the All-MWC seasons of Jason Phillips and Robert Hanson, who have both moved on to the NFL. Washington is a top run-stopper and a top coverage guy, which is key in the MWC. Priest and Sanders have started every game at corner the past three seasons, which bodes well for the secondary.
