Temple NCAA Football Predictions 2009

Written July 22, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Temple Football PredictionsCoach Al Golden has turned Temple from a bottom feeder into a contender in the MAC in his three years on the job. Last season’s 5-7 record didn’t show how well this team actually played. The Temple Owls lost only one game by more than 10 points last season. Two losses came in overtime and five losses came by six points or less. Golden has a good nucleus of players returning on both sides of the ball this season. Now if they can just turn some of those close losses into victories, the Owls will be going bowling in 2009. Sportsbook.com has their college football odds posted so sign up with them and take advantage of their reduced Friday juice.

Offense: Temple does lose three-year starting quarterback, Adam DiMichele, but the Owls have solid playing experience to choose from in either Vaughn Charlton or Chester Stewart. Charlton took over in 2007 as the No.1 when DiMichele suffered a season-ending leg injury. He played in seven games, completing 78 of 137 passes for 808 yards and three touchdowns before redshirting last season. Stewart earned 3 starts last season due to a separated shoulder of DiMichele, completing 53 of 103 passes for 524 yards and four touchdowns. Charlton and Stewart were neck-and-neck in the spring and are listed as co-starters on the post-spring depth chart.

Whichever QB wins the job, they’ll have two solid wide receivers in Jason Harper and Dy’Onne Crudup to throw the ball to. Harper is the top returnee with 33 grabs for 571 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Four starters return on the offensive line, but after spring drills only two of the four are penciled in as starters. Sophomore standout Wayne Tribue started nine games at left guard as a freshman, and he’ll either stay there or take over for four-year starter Alex Derenthal at center. Several returning running backs include Lamar McPherson, Kee-ayre Griffin, Joe Jones and Ahkeem Smith. The team will be looking for a spark here after finishing 109th out of 119 teams in rushing last season. McPherson could be the one to provide the spark, as he’s finally settled into the No. 1 tailback role after spending time at linebacker and fullback before shifting to running back. Griffin had a team-high 394 yards and five touchdowns last year, while Jones gained 275 yards on 100 carries.

Defense: Nose tackle Andre Neblett leads a defense that returns eight starters in all. Six of those eight are penciled in as starters on the post-spring depth chart. Neblett was an All-MAC selection last season after recording 36 tackles, 7.5 coming for a loss, and 2 forced fumbles. The line will be the strength of the defense as Neblett gets help from end Junior Galette, a senior with 16.5 career sacks on his resume. Alex Joseph knows how to lay the wood at middle linebacker after compiling 87 tackles last year.

The one to watch this fall might just be outside linebacker Amara Kamara, who had an impressive spring showing after registering 67 stops in 2008. In the secondary there is some experience with free safety Jaiquawn Jarrett, who led the team with 88 tackles. Strong safety Dominique Harris also had 66 tackles and a team-high three interceptions with three forced fumbles. Cornerback Anthony Ferla missed last season due to injury, but he was back at the top of the depth chart by spring’s end after registering 47 tackles when healthy in 2007.

Somebody’s personal recession is going to be ended this fall by betting a lot of money on the Owls. There will be no line for Nova, but they should cover as a dog vs. Penn State and Buffalo and may go 2-1 out of the shute. Heck, if Vaughn Charlton plays to his ability, they could shock the world and beat Penn State.
