Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 6, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Baltimore Ravens are one of the surprise teams in the NFL this season going 5-3 with a rookie quarterback to start the season, but are just 2-2 on the road, and this week they head down South to take on the Houston Texans, who continue to battle to get to .500. The oddsmakers think this one is going to come down to the wire, as the Ravens come in 1 point favorites over the Texans at Sportsbook.com

The Ravens are riding a 3 game winning streak, and last week they came from 14 down to beat the Browns 37-27. Joe Flacco has another good day as he completed 248 yards and 2 scores including one to the veteran Derrick Mason who led the way with 9 catches for 136 yards. The running game also got on track last week as fellow rookie Ray Rice was a beast running it 21 times for 154 yards including a very impressive 60 yard run. This offense just needs to play smart and pound it out on the ground, and take what it can through the air, as their defense continues to play at an extremely high level.

Speaking of that defense, man did they turn it on last week against the Browns. After falling behind 27-13 the the defense shut down the Browns offense, and linebacker Terrell Suggs capped it off with a 42 yard interception for a touchdown to put the Ravens up for good. The Ravens got beat through the air last week, as Anderson threw for 219 yards, but the run defense was stout allowing just 64 yards on the ground. The Texans will be without their starting quarterback this week, so we expect a big day out of this unit. Bet Ravens -1 at Sportsbook.com

The Texans come into this without Matt Scaub as he is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a knee injury. That means Sage Rosenfels will have to step in and lead this team to a much needed victory on the road. Rosenfels hasn’t been terrible when he has played completing nearly 68% of his passes, but everyone remembers the two huge fumbles he had against the Colts that cost them the game. The Texans need to get more out of the running game this week as Steve Slaton was the only one who ran the football last week, and totaled just 62 yards on the ground. Its not going to be easy against the Ravens, but this team can’t rely on the pass to win them football games.

The Texans defense had no answer for Adrian Peterson or Gus Frerotte as both had big games. Peterson ran the ball 25 times for 139 yards and a score, while Frerotte piled on 3 touchdowns while completing 11 of 18 passes. This team has really played good football at home, and we actually think if the Texans defense can find a way to force some turnovers early and get a little lead going, they might be able to run away with this game and pull off a minor upset.
