2011-12 Preview

Billy Kennedy was named the 21st coach in Texas A&M men’s basketball history. The 47-year-old Kennedy comes to Aggieland after five seasons at the helm at Murray State University in Kentucky, to try and build on the somewhat successful season of the Aggies in 2011. For the first time in league history, Texas A&M has been picked to win the Big 12 Conference men’s basketball championship. The squad returns 3 starters and 10 letterwinners from a 2010-11 team that went 24-9, finished third in the Big 12 at 10-6 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season.

Backcourt

The 2011-12 Aggie roster will feature 25 games of NCAA Tournament experience, with Dash Harris and Elston Turner leading the backcourt. Harris won the team’s Dominique Kirk Defensive Player of the Year award. He played in all 33 games, starting 32 and averaged 27.5 minutes (third on team), 4.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He will be relied upon to handle the team’s offense this season along with veteran guard Turner.

Frontcourt

Holding down the frontcourt for Texas A&M this season is David Loubeau. The 6-8 forward was the second leading scorer on the team in 2011, averaging 11.8 points per game. He hauled down 5 rebounds per game and shot an impressive 50% from the field. He is also a third-team All-Big 12 honoree by the league’s head coaches.
