Texas at Iowa State Odds

The Texas Longhorns suffered seven losses last season, one of which came at home to Iowa State 28-21. It was the Cyclones’ first-ever win over Texas, and their first road victory over a ranked opponent in 20 years. These Longhorn players will have revenge on their minds at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa this weekend. Kick off is set for 7:00 EST Saturday and this Big 12 showdown will be nationally televised on FX.
According to the Week 5 college football odds, Texas is listed as a 9.5-point road favorite with a total set of 48 points.
Texas
The 17th-ranked Longhorns are in the midst of a four-game stretch in which they will face teams that beat them last year. Texas (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) beat Rice 34-9 in their opener, followed by a come-from-behind 17-16 win over BYU the following week. They would open their revenge tour with a 49-20 triumph at UCLA in Week 3, and now come into this game off of a bye week.
In their win over BYU, Mack Brown decided to bench starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert after he threw two interceptions in his first eight attempts. The tandem of Case McCoy and David Ash led them back for the win, and these two played admirable last week in their dominant road victory over the Bruins. Case, brother of former Longhorn Colt McCoy, has completed 19 of 25 passes (76.0 percent) for 225 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Freshman running back Malcolm Brown has carried the load offensively, rushing for 264 yards and a score. Forwhitt Whitaker and Cody Johnson have combined for seven rushing touchdowns as well. Jaxon Shipley, brother of former Longhorn Jordan Shipley, has a team-high 10 receptions for 139 yards and a score. Mike Davis has been their big-play guy, catching six balls for 192 yards (32.0/reception). Texas boasts the 11th-ranked unit in total defense (258.7 yards/game), and they are also 16th in scoring defense (15.0 points/game).
Iowa State
The Cyclones are off to a thrilling start to their 2011 campaign. Iowa State (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) has three wins by a combined eight points thus far. They topped Northern Iowa 20-19 in their opener thanks to a last-minute touchdown from Steele Jantz. The Cyclones would beat in-state rival Iowa 44-41 in triple overtime the following week, and Jantz was incredible once again down the stretch. Despite three interceptions in his first four attempts in Week 3, ISU was able to down Connecticut 24-20 on the road. Like Texas, the Cyclones will have a bye week to get ready for this one.
Jantz, a junior college transfer, hasn’t posted spectacular numbers this season. He is completing just 57.5 percent of his passes for 666 yards and six touchdowns to six interceptions. But when the game has been on the line, nobody in the country has been more clutch than this kid. ISU is 3-0 despite committing five more turnovers than their opponents. Shontrelle Johnson leads all ISU backs with 200 rushing yards. Jantz is second on the team in rushing with 112 yards and two scores. Darius Reynolds is having an excellent season at receiver, catching 13 balls for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Aaron Horne (14 receptions, 184 yards) and Josh Lenz (12, 134, two TD) are also playmakers in the receiving game.
ISU has been a middle-of-the pack team on both sides of the ball, but their defense has carried them for the most part. ISU ranks 60th in total defense (364.3 yards/game) and 74th in scoring defense (26.7 points/game), but both of those numbers are a bit inflated due to their triple overtime game against Iowa. ISU is 72nd in total offense (388.6 yards/game) and 65th in scoring offense (29.3 points/game).
