College Football Betting Odds: Texas vs Oklahoma
Written October 15, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The game of the weekend occurs in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, where the Texas Longhorns will take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Last year’s game ended with a 45-35 Texas victory, but Oklahoma still got to the Big 12 Championship Game and then the BCS Championships Game, which definitely upset a lot of Texas fans. If anything this rivalry will be even more heated this year as these two very talented teams will both want this game as badly as any game they play all season. It is the matchup between two star quarterbacks and two storied programs, and this should be a great game for all college football fans to enjoy.
The Oklahoma Sooners haven’t had the kind of season they were expecting going into it. Sam Bradford was injured in their opening game, which they lost to BYU. The Sooners lost their star tight end Jermaine Gresham for the season. Just as it appeared the Sooners were back to firing on all cylinders even without Bradford, they fell just short against Miami. Having said all of this, Oklahoma is definitely the scariest 2 loss team in the country today. They have Sam Bradford back under center with all of his amazing talent and leadership abilities. They also have a tremendous running back duo in DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown. The defense has improved from a year ago, and they are especially brutal against the run. The Sooners are allowing just 54 yards on the ground each game. The Oklahoma defense has only given up 8.4 points per game. The question marks for this team have been at wide receiver and on the offensive line, where they did lose some starters from last year’s team. Texas comes into this game at 6-0 and #2 in the country, but they still haven’t put together a complete game just yet. Longhorn faithful hope this is the weekend they put it all together. Colt McCoy has been very good, but not quite as good as some might have expected. The completion percentage is terrific at 73.4%, but he has also thrown 6 interceptions already this season. The Texas offense is averaging 47 points per game, but they haven’t played any defenses even close to as tough as Oklahoma. Vondrell McGee has been the best running threat for Texas, but they haven’t used the running game a whole lot this year. The defense has been very good, allowing just 15 points per game this season. The rush defense is one of the best in the country, allowing a miniscule 46.6 yards per game on the ground.
The college football odds makers have set the Longhorns as 3 point favorites in the Red River Shootout this year. The posted total is set at 51 points. Texas is just 1-5 against the spread in their last 6 games, but they are 4-0 against the spread in their last 5 matchups with the Sooners.
Expect both Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy to put up big numbers in this game. Oklahoma has the better rushing attack, but Texas probably has the better offensive line. There will be a whole lot of talent playing on the field Saturday afternoon. Texas is the favorite, but don’t count out a Sooner squad that is just starting to get back to normal.
