College Football Odds: Texas Tech vs Houston
Written September 24, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
As soon as you say the names Texas Tech and Houston you have to know that there is going to be a whole lot of offense, and that should definitely be the case Saturday night in Houston. The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree, but with Mike Leach still at the top the Red Raiders are still putting plenty of points on the board. Earlier this year the Houston Cougars made a name for themselves by defeating Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Houston is looking to be a real BCS buster, while Texas Tech is looking to continue to be a factor in the difficult Big 12 south. For those of you that bet college football, take a look at this incredible $500 match bonus from BetUS.
The Houston Cougars weren’t on too many people’s radar screens before the season as far as real contenders, but the 45-35 win at Oklahoma State definitely served notice that the big boys better watch out for this powerful team from Conference USA. The Cougars have put up 100 points in two games already this year and clearly have the offensive firepower to play with anyone. Quarterback Case Keenum has a great deal of experience in the system now and he has shown he can lead the team in an impressive fashion. Tyron Carrier is a super sophomore that had 71 receptions in his freshman season and seems to be Case Keenum’s favorite target. The defense hasn’t proven itself to be one of the best, so it will need to step up and make some big stops in order for the Cougars to fulfill their dream of being a BCS bound football team.
Texas Tech lost a whole lot of talent to the NFL this past offseason, but Mike Leach and his offensive genius are still in Lubbock. Quarterback Taylor Potts has a long ways to go to get to the status of a Graham Harrell, but he can certainly throw the ball very well. No single wide receiver has stood out as a top target yet, but Tech does have several guys who can catch the football pretty well. The Texas Tech defense has improved somewhat over the past few years and will be counted on to make some plays in big games this season.
Houston has opened as 1.5 point favorites at most sports books, likely because of the home field advantage, however, the current college football odds have the game listed as a pick ‘em. The total for the game is predictably astronomically high, sitting at 73 points right now. The Cougars do tend to play well at home, as they are 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games. On the other hand, Houston is just 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 games as favorite. Texas Tech hasn’t shown itself very well on the road, but it does tend to fare well against Conference USA competition.
With this game airing in primetime Saturday night on ESPN2 and Houston finally bursting onto the scene in college football I wouldn’t want to put money against the Cougars. The Cougars have the players with more experience and they should be able to cover in this big matchup on their home field.
