Texas Tech Nevada Predictions

Written September 4, 2008 by Jack Jones

On Saturday, September 6th at 9:05 PM EST the Red Raiders from Texas Tech will head to Mackay Stadium in Reno to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack. The early odds at Bookmaker show Texas Tech as a hefty 10.5 point road favorite of Nevada, with the total being set at 67.

Last week the Red Raiders took on Eastern Washington in front of the home crowd and posted a 49-24 victory. That gave Texas Tech nine straight wins in their home-openers and helped move them up to the 12th spot in the polls, the highest the school has been in more than 30 yards.

Nevada wanted to come out firing in their opener against Grambling State and did just that by winning 49-13. The team had been disappointed that they were shutout in their bowl game, ending a scoring streak of 329 games.

The Red Raiders will once again focus almost all of their attention on airing the ball out. Against Eastern Washington quarterback Graham Harrell was 43-of-58 for 536 passing yards, but he only had a pair of touchdowns. Not a bad start for a guy who averaged almost 432 ypg of total offense a year ago to lead the nation. What was unusual were the five rushing touchdowns by the team, including one by Harrell himself. The team still felt they have a lot of room to improve and are hoping the tune-up will propel them against Nevada.

On defense the team struggled more than it should have, allowing 341 passing yards, but at least the secondary was able to intercept three balls. Another sore note is that the Red Raiders had 18 penalties for a loss of 169 yards, something that simply can’t be done when they get into Big 12 South play against the likes of Texas and Oklahoma. While Harrell will get most of the attention for this game, Nevada has a solid quarterback of their own in Colin Kaepernick. Last year’s WAC Freshman of the Year ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter, then added another later in the game. The box score was full of names in the rushing department as 11 different players attempt a run for 426 yards of offense. Vai Taua led the way for the team after rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 attempts. Luke Lippincott also threw in 69 yards and a score with only nine carries as the Wolf Pack ran into the end zone seven times.

It should come as no surprise that Nevada ran the ball effectively since last year they were no. 1 in the conference and no. 12 in the nation with a 214.1 ypg average.

This Wolfpack defense though isn’t full of slouches. The Wolf Pack dominated Grambling State in the trenches, allowing just five yards on 40 rushing attempts. The defense was credited with an astounding 17 tackles for losses and six sacks. However, don’t expect this team to come anywhere close to shutting out the Red Raiders.
