Texas Tech vs Oklahoma State Spread
Written November 11, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will do battle in Stillwater this Saturday night. The Red Raiders enter this one at 6-3, while Oklahoma State is 7-2 and ranked 18th in the country. Both teams are known for their high-powered offenses, but both teams have seen their defenses improve this year as well. Even with the improved defenses, when these two teams meet you have to expect most of the college football picks will be on the over in this one. Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach is keeping his lips sealed about who the starting quarterback will be this Saturday, but most believe it will be Taylor Potts. Steven Sheffield probably isn’t quite healthy enough to start this weekend. Sheffield has been the best under center, but Potts can definitely sling the ball and move the team very well too. Potts has a 67.2% completion percentage and a touchdown to interception ratio of 15 to 9. The Red Raiders have a plethora of wide receivers. In fact, nine players have 20 or more receptions this year for the Red Raiders. One of the big differences for Texas Tech this year is they now have a very solid running game thanks to Baron Batch. Batch is averaging 5.7 yards a carry and has 10 touchdowns. The defense of the Red Raiders is improved, but they are still inconsistent and are the weaker unit for this team. Mike Leach’s team are sometimes tough to make the football picks on because of his last minute decisions and his interesting coaching style, but they are definitely a lot of fun to watch.
Oklahoma State lost its best playmaker at wide receiver when Dez Bryant was suspended for the rest of the year, but they still have plenty of offensive weapons. Zac Robinson is a senior quarterback who can beat you with his arm and with his legs. Robinson is counted on to do a lot for this team, and he has definitely delivered this year. Robinson has completed 64.2% of his passes and thrown 13 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions this year. In the backfield Keith Toston has been a very nice surprise for the Cowboys. Toston has almost 900 yards rushing and averages 5.7 yards per carry. Toston is also a good receiver out of the backfield, which gives the other team a little extra to think about. The Cowboys defense is much improved from a year ago. The defense is especially strong against the run, where they give up less than 100 yards per game.
The college football odds for this weekend show Oklahoma State as a small 4 point favorite at home against Texas Tech. The posted total has been set at 60 points. Oklahoma State is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 games as a home favorite. Texas Tech is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 Big 12 conference games.
Both offenses will be able to move the ball through the air, but it may be the running games that decide who wins this one. Both teams have pretty solid running games this year, so the team that is able to run the ball effectively and setup the big passing plays through the run will likely win this hard fought match up.
