Texas A&M v. Texas Tech: Big 12 Basketball Tournament

Written March 11, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

texas-tech-texas-amTexas Tech is a team that is one-dimensional on both sides of the ball.  Their top players are Alan Voskuil and John Roberson who both average a tad over 14 PPG with Mike Singletary averaging a bit over 11 PPG.  Tech is a team that can cause a lot of people match up problems despite their poor record.  While The Red Raiders have offensive explosions at times, their defensive skills, or lack of, have caused them nightmares this year.  They give up an unacceptable 77.6 PPG.  Their leading rebounder only averages 5.7 boards a game which tells you a bit about the low level of intensity they bring so often.  Red Raider fans however are keeping hope alive as their beat down they put on Kansas on 3/4/09 (84-65 win) showed signs of fight and tenacity.  If Tech has any chance to win or even be competitive on Wednesday vs A&M they must come with not only an offensive explosion, but a defensive mindset as well.  Man to man defense will surely not work vs A&M and a zone will be tough but if they can force Josh Carter and Donald Sloan to take contested shots they have a chance.  You can take Texas Tech +6 using your checking account at Sports Interaction!

Texas A&M is a dangerous team right now.  At this time of the year people always discuss the teams in the tournament that they would prefer to avoid.  Make no mistake about it, the Texas A&M Aggies are one of those teams.  Donald Sloan is playing superb ball and Josh Carter is as dangerous as any player in the Big 12 Tournament.  A&M scores over 71 PPG and gives up a respectable 66 PPG.  The Aggies have a very well balanced attack.  Josh Carter is their scoring assassin and will always have the ball in clutch scenarios.  Chinemelu Elonu is an above average big man who solidifies the paint very nicely on both ends of the ball and Donald Sloan is one of the most underrated players in the Big 12 as well as the nation, he is the prime example of a team leader.  A&M has some very impressive wins this year beating Arizona, Oklahoma St, Texas and most recent handling Missouri 96-86.  They ended the regular season on a six game winning streak.  If the Aggies play the way they have been playing Tech has no chance, if they come out flat thinking this will be a walk through, they might get upset.  Bet Texas A&M -6 at BetUS, where a $500 deposit will get you a $500 bonus!

Prediction

Texas A&M defeated Texas Tech twice this year 79-70 @ home and 79-73 on the road.  Josh Carter is playing at a very high level and is poised for a monstrous game.  Elonu’s size would seem to be to much for the Red Raiders in the paint and neither Voshkuil, Roberson or Singletary is expected to play Sloan to a stand still.  A&M is a stronger rebounding team, gives up 12 PPG less and is on the right side of the bubble, as of now.  Expect the Aggies to come out firing on all cylinders.  This team is playing at an extremely high level.  Texas Tech was 9-14-1 ATS this year while Texas A&M was 15-8 ATS.  This line is simply reflected on Tech’s upset over Kansas.  JUMP ON IT AND BIG.  Tech has no match up answers for the Aggies three best players.  Match up problems all over the court and that does not play for an advantage when you give up a tad more then 77 PPG.  Watch out here, this has all the making for BLOWOUT CENTRAL.  Expect something very similar to what the South Florida vs Seton hall game gave you last night (which I predicted correct) but in this one the score should be a wider margin.

Final Regular Season Records:

Texas Tech 13-18
Texas A&M 23-8

Betting Line: Texas A&M -6

Jordan’s Pick: Texas A&M -6

Final Score Prediction:

Texas A&M 83
Texas Tech 67

Aggieboy, as you are aware A&M was up by 19 at half. Unfortunately in sports things happen and comebacks like this do not happen everyday. Please feel free to check some of my other predicitons and see how they panned out including my cleveland state upset pick over Butler and my prediciton of providence beating depaul 83-75. Final score was 83-74. I appreciate your interest in reading my article and feel free to post any comments you may have regarding your opinions on my picks.

    Thank you,
    Jordan
