MLB Odds & Predictions: Detroit Tigers at LA Angels

Written April 22, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

angels-tigers-predictions-042209The Tigers are one of four teams in their division that have seven wins to date. As the American League Central continues to be wide open, any of the five teams have the potential to be crowned division champs. Detroit is showing promise and plenty of the tell tale signs we all expected last season. Miguel Cabrera, as stated in previous articles, is playing like the early season MVP. He is hitting .451 with 4 home runs and 12 RBIs in his first 13 games. Lead off man Curtis Granderson has showed great power, hitting 4 home runs and collecting 8 RBIs, but his BA is only .232. He’ll need to improve on that as the year goes on. Perhaps the biggest surprise player so far is Brandon Inge. The multi-positioned player has hit 4 homers along side 12 RBIs and is hitting .290. Magglio and Guillen you can count on picking up their production. Pitching is what has kept them from a better record so far. A shocker, I know. It seems to be this team is more in interested in stock piling big names both in their line up and staff instead of filling team needs. Tonight’s starter is Justin Verlander. It feels like just yesterday when Verlander was one of the dominating pitchers in baseball, but his struggles have continued into this year. Through three starts he is 0-2 with an ERA of 7.88. In one start last season against the Angels he picked up the loss, going 5.2 Innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits. But, let’s evaluate this for a second. The Tigers are 7-6 with a healthy core, The Halos have Vlad out for a month and have struggled in their own right. Could this be Verlander’s break out game? You heard it here, expect him to pitch great tonight (possible CG).  Wednesday’s baseball lines put the Tigers at +100 with the Over/Under set for 8.5 runs.

The LA Angels have entered a nightmare this season that doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. With the tragic death of young star prospect Nick Adenhart, to Lackey and Ervin Santana’s injuries, and now they have to play with out “Bad” Vlad Guerrero for at least one month. They are 5-8 through their first 13 games. With the exception of Torii Hunter, the Halos have no power to speak of. Bobby Abreu is hitting .373, Kendry Morales is hitting .234, Juan Rivera is hitting .290 while all of them combine for not a single home run. The speed of Chone Figgins will be crucial to their success as they will need to manufacture tons of runs through small ball mentality. In regards to their staff, it has been pretty solid despite injuries. Joe Saunders takes the mound tonight for the Angels. In his first three starts Saunders has gone 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA. He has pitched into the 7th inning in all of his starts, which is important due to the lack of production from the bullpen. While Saunders did go 17-7 last year, tonight may not be the night to count on him for a big win. In his two starts against Detroit, he went 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA as the Angels hit .326 against him. Hint, hint. Picks below.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Tigers are 4-13 in their last 17 road games. Detroit is 2-6 in Verlander’s last eight starts on grass fields. In the last 60 meetings between these two teams, the LA Angels are 44-16. Wow, that is some trend right there. Now, who is ready to break it with me? The Angels have struggled with the bats while the Tigers have been swinging big sticks. Cabrera has been a monster, while Granderson and Inge have also been hitting with power.  Tonight, the difference maker at the plate will be Magglio Ordonez, as he breaks out tonight with a big game. Picks below, including our BEST BET UNDERDOG SPECIAL.

Jordan’s Picks: Detroit Tigers +100 & Tigers/Angels UNDER 8.5

(Tigers is my BEST BET)

Documented MLB Record:

22-10 OVERALL

8-3 BEST BET

We settled for a split last night as Tampa Bay continues their offensive struggle. They put up two runs in the top of the 1st and sleepwalked through the rest of the game as the Mariners won 4-2. We were dead-on with the UNDER 8.5 points as both starters and bullpens pitched well. Let’s get back on track tonight as I threw out some extra picks for everyone. Now let’s go make it happen.

Velander seems to be turning the corner, so I like them tonight too, but I liked them with their true ace last night and they lost late by 1.GL
