Baseball Picks: Detroit Tigers at Oakland A’s
Written August 21, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Tigers are coming off a series win against the Mariners winning two of three games. In the rubber match yesterday they came back in the ninth inning scoring two runs off closer David Aardsma. Clete Thomas was the guy who singled in the run as that should give Detroit a big boost headed into tonight’s game. Miguel Cabrera is core of this teams lineup. He is a power hitting 1st baseman who has a good glove and hits .335 from the plate. Miggy also has 24 homers and 72 RBIs. Curtis Granderson has been a key part to this team as well blasting 23 home runs with 54 RBIs and providing a gold glove type performance in the field. Great role players like Brandon Inge and Placido Polanco crucial to their success. On the mound for the Tigers tonight is Edwin Jackson. This kid has one of the best arms in the game. Jackson is 9-5 with a 2.85 ERA on the season. He has has a slightly better ERA on the road then at home and an ERA on 2.61 in night outings. In one start against the A’s this season Jackson went 7 innings allowing only 1 run on six hits while picking up the victory. He is a power pitcher and will face a team who has no power bats to scare you. This game is set up for him to be dominating and do not be surprised if you see him take a no hitter into the 5th or 6th innings. Expect Edwin to go a minimum of 7 innings with no more then 2 runs allowed. The x-factor at the plate tonight will be newly acquired Aubrey Huff. Friday’s baseball lines are posted with the Tigers as -140 money line favorites over the A’s and an over/under of 8 runs.
The Oakland Athletics have been a feisty team of late considering they have no players that are any good. When Mark Ellis and Kurt Suzuki is your three-four combo then you know your team is very weak. However, they have still gone 5-5 in their last 10 games overall. Rajai Davis has been an exciting spark plug playing a superb center field. The problem though remains the same, power lacks in this lineup horribly. The Athletics do not have one batter with more then 55 RBIs this season. They do have some young arms though, one of them will be on the mound tonight in Gio Gonzalez. On the season he is 4-3 with a 5.88 ERA. His home/away numbers are just staggering though. He has a 1-3 record and 9.00 ERA at home this season while sporting a 3-0 record with an impressive 3.74 ERA on the road. He also is dreadful during night starts as his ERA shows 7.22 during night outings. In one start against the Tigers this season he went 5 innings allowing 3 runs on seven hits as Detroit hit .389 off him. Expect Gio to be pounded tonight and for the Athletics lineup to have no answer for Edwin Jackson. The notes are below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Tigers are 7-20 in their last 27 road games. Detroit is 19-11 against AL West opponents this season.. The Athletics are 28-32 at home this season. The Tigers are 4-2 against the Athletics in six games played this season. With Detroit in a division race and providing one of their better pitcher to throw tonight you got to think that they’ll be able to handle this poor lineup Oakland has not to mention their pitchers situational stats point to disaster for him tonight. Picks below.
Jordan’s Picks: Detroit Tigers -140 & UNDER 8 Runs
