Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays: MLB Picks & Betting Lines
Written April 7, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Detroit Tigers were arguably the most disappointing team in all of baseball last year. They started off the season yesterday with that same deer caught in the headlights look. They were slow, poor in the field and very un-disciplined at the plate. Now, they did face in what I believe in MLB’s best pitcher in Roy Halladay, with that said tonight against young gun David Purcey, they will look to have better results. With the hitters they have it is in-excusable to continue this free fall. Lead off man Curtis Granderson is the catalyst for this team. When he gets on base that causes all havoc for opposing pitchers as his speed is superb. Sluggers Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera must have great years for this team if they plan on having any type of success. On to the Tigers pitching staff. We all saw their “ace” if you can call him one in Justin Verlander get rocked yesterday and today they put Edwin Jackson who they got from Tampa Bay on the mound. This is a kid who does have good stuff, but is a career 25-30 record with a 5.15 ERA. The Tigers are a team that will always look good on paper and then make you irritated at the end of the game when they lose by scores of 9-5. Then you’ll say to yourself, “Damn, why did I take them again.” Well, today I’m here to make sure you don’t make that mistake. A quick look at today’s baseball lines show the Jays -115 and the Over/Under at 9.5 runs.
The Toronto Blue Jays are a team that will be in contention all year long. This is a very good young team with “Doc” Halladay once again the leader of the pitching staff. We saw what type of potential Adam Lind has as yesterday he plated 6 RBI’s. Travis Snider is one of the best youngsters in all of baseball as he is a complete player. His fielding is superb and he has the combination of pop and average from the plate. Vernon Wells is poised for a big bounce back year and their best overall player, the multi talented combo outfielder in All-Star Alex Rios. While Toronto most likely will not be able to squeak into the playoffs as they play in the division of death, don’t expect the usual mid-pack ending to their season. On the Mound tonight will be David Purcey. This is a kid with a boatload of ability. Do not be fooled by his 3-6 record. He has a combination of 3-4 pitches he uses and is primed for a nice season as the Blue Jays’ second man in their rotation. Look for Toronto to take game two in this series and for this game to be much more low scoring. Both pitchers in this game are young, but are very talented and will be underestimated coming into tonight’s game.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: Alex Rios, Vernon Wells, Travis Snider and Adam Lind have a nice chemistry that could easily make the Jays this years surprise team to make a run. While the Tigers have Maggs and Miguel Cabrera for power and Granderson to lead off, they have no balance. When you match up Jackson and Purcey, tonight’s two starting pitchers, they have similar stuff and are both highly touted young arms. Usually the Tigers are more known for power and Toronto is a speedy team. I really like the way the Blue Jays look and think they have something special brewing to start the season. Toronto will win this game in a lower scoring affair as opposed to last night. Look for the x-factor tonight to be the combination of Alex Rios and Vernon Wells of Toronto. Both of these players have a nice power/speed combination and I see them getting on base quite a bit. That will start to rattle Edwin Jackson and when Detroit gets down early, well all know how this team reacts to struggle. Blue jays and the UNDER.
Betting Line: Toronto -115 & O/U 9.5
